Thread Starter | Cheap Cool Looking Mics
I have recently been doing photography and video work. I'm wanting to find some cool looking mics that are very cheap, broken etc. Any ideas on what to look for? Thanks |

| The old EV 660 series chrome plated mics were pretty cool. Not so cheap, but cool looking and great sounding are the Heil Fin and Classic mics. Some of the drive-up-window industrial type mics were cool looking... -tINY |

Take a look on ebay, there is a mic section under Pro Audio. At any given time there are a boatload of cheap crappy sounding mics with unusal Art Deco styling which is what I gather you are looking for. You could just ask for high res photos from the sellers of the ones you like and save some effort.

If you can wait a few months to get the mics, you can sign up for Chance's Group Buy and pick up some brand new, interesting looking mics for next to nothing (plus some of them sound good, too). If you're interested, check out this Gearslutz thread for more info.

Such a short OP -- amazing some folks could have completely missed the point... He's looking for cool-looking cheap mics -- even if they don't work -- to photograph and vid. Don't get me wrong, I've sinned this sin more than a few times myself. I'm just sayin...

Silvertone "bullet" mics look cool. M-Audio Luna looks cool for a couple hundred.

I was mainly looking for some cool looking older mics, under $50 I have a few cool looking expensive mics. I could care less if they work. I've been looking on ebay for mics like the Shure 55 and Green Bullet. I have a AKG D112 and a Beyer M380 that looks way cool. Just wanting some suggestions that I could look up. I just don't want anyone dropping a U87 or such. Thanks |

From my own experience, it's one of the most versatile mics I've ever come across. /I'll admit that I do own one, so draw your own conclusions as to bias, but that was after the better part of a day A/B'ing close to 15 mics through several preamps at Mercenary. //like any other piece of gear YMMV... just wanted to make the comment To the topic at hand... you can rent or find prop mics pretty cheap, since it's just a shell. Otherwise my vote would be for some of the older EV stuff. You can find nice-looking pieces on eBay pretty cheap. | |
