vocal mic to complement AT 4040?

My current main vocal mic is an Audio Technica 4040. I'm interested in what you would suggest as the next mic to buy, for vocals (male), for $500-$1000.

Oh, and a buddy has a Shure SM7 i could borrow, so let's take that out of the running.

Should i look for something with a slightly different tone to complement the 4040, or should I be looking for pure upgrade? What are your suggestions for both/either route?

Thanks!

Well, if you already have an AT4040, I'd certainly suggest something different...

Ribbon: AEA R84

LD condensers: Oktavamod 319, or AT4047 possibly the Mojave ma-200....

I guess the list goes on and on... but that's what I think of when I think of good quality and between $500-$1000.

I would suggest a Telefunken M16mkII. I have the at4040 and my next and final mic will be the Tele. I think that with these 2 you 'll have your condenser mic bases all covered.

Maybe check out a Spudnik or even the new Pearlman mic. Other then that I'd say save a bit more and get something that is a level up from the 4040 in terms of clarity and a smoother top end.

The Hamburg Edition ADK was tailor made for Male Vocals.

Check out vocals on either of Dave Barnes last 2 CD's.

Cheers!
