royers sound crappy to me . I dumped mine and bought a beyer M-160
I love it. I also find the fatheads are better on dist gtr than the 121. Better mids.
Though Im afraid of blowing it. The royer was pretty solid from an spl standpoint

have matched pair of royer 122's... use em on a lot of thangs but never elec gtr

m160 aint bad if you do the kramer/hendrix m160+421+57 thang on the cab...

cant really be bothered w/ that now that i've found my dream elec gtr mic: the aea R92!!!
i play a 50's tweed fender and a 64 vox ac30 hi-boost... wack this mic in front (and you can get CLOSE w/ this thing if ya wanna) and it's THE sound.

only have one so i usually wack a 4038 on rhy gtr, maybe eq that one a bit.

the R92 is a no-brainer. it can (almost) even make a mesa boogie sound good (ok, maybe i'm over-hyping now)

Not a ribbon but a Beyer M88 is a sweet mic on distorted guitars

Question for the wise. I bought a Peluso R14 ribbon mic and I'm terrified of damaging the ribbons after reading about how sensitive they are. I want to be able to get closer to the cab? How close can I get with the mic safely?

Ribbons don't mind high SPL in the audio range. But they really don't like "chuffs" or pulses of air - such as what comes out of a bass cab's tuned port.

But a stock Peluso R14 with its several layers of wind blast protection in front of a guitar cab? Don't worry about it.

The royer is a studio standard, but the NEye seemed to have a more authentic tone to me; being half the price, I grabbed one last week and I'm thrilled.
Total +1 on that

Those are miced with a combination of a Royer 121 and a U89.
Hey delcosmos,
Would you elaborate on how do you use the U89? Why that mic?

After trying a lot of ribbons and dynamics I ended with Royer, they simply sound better for a guitar application.

Best regards.

Armando Avila.
wow, that's a dream rig, so how many Royers you own?

Pastor.

I remember first opening up the fader on a clean guitar track with a 121, my guitar mic finding days were over!

I've heard the R92 and really liked it, less low end which is great for getting it close into a speaker, also had very cool gritty mids and that ribbon smooth high.
