Radiohead - Live From The Basement

Just curious if anyone had an opportunity to check out Radiohead's - Live from the Basement performance which aired on VH1. It was filmed in Nigel Godrich's basement studio, and I have heard some wonderful things about the show, and the performance. Unfortunately, it looks like it will not be airing again anytime soon, but I believe VH1 is hosting a video of the performance. Did anyone check it out? Any thoughts?

Cheers.

Wow. I searched for some of these videos and that lead me to the "scotch mist" videos. Man, Radiohead is amazing. :)

I watched the whole thing. Loved every minute of it. I will be catching them live on Sunday when they come to Dallas. I can't wait.

i caught this on a late night repeat (VH1) - loved it! sounded great... a good live document for the band.

Couldn't help thinking though ( on a somewhat subconscious level ):

1. RE20 on vocals is back! (mic going to go up in price)
2. Coles 4038's on overheads (mics going to go up in price)

and lastly - what was that centered mono overhead mic? neumann? akg?

Hmmm. And here I thought the PR35 would render the RE20 obsolete. :)

Great performance and great overall show.

And...get this!
bands playing thier instruments on televison?????
What an idea????

Any channel that plays a band playing thier songs in an intimate setting deserves my attention. I know it wasnt live so who really knows how many times they had to run through Nude to get it right? I don't care. They played it right at least once and its nice to see musicians playing the music that they write on televison without booty shaking bling wearing obnoxious storylines that make no sense anyway.

Thank you VH1.
Thank you Radiohead.
You both have a new fan.

Yawn. Bland, safe, predictable. Not a hair out of place. Nothing left to chance. They want to be Can so bad but they're 30 odd years too late and don't have the imagination. In fairness, Godrich does a good job on his end and the lads have obviously had some lessons on their instruments in the last few years. Good for them!

That may very well be the dumbest thing I have ever read on the Internets.

Really? You need to get out more! Or maybe just listen to more music that doesn't suffer the exact same malaise as most modern art. However I give these guys huge kudos for effort and they're obviously in it for the music first which is rare and admirable these days. There's definitely a lot to be said for that. But they're just not terribly original or (more importantly) interesting, which is hilarious and ironic considering the aesthetic road they've decided to go down in the last 10 years or so.

Anyway, safe and boring seems to be the new fantastic. Glad you enjoyed it!!

just out of curiosity.....what bands DO you like?

what is original? what is not predictable?

it would help if more than 10 people had heard of the band so we know what you are talking about.

serious question.

personally i think radiohead is a brilliant band on many levels and enjoy every one of their albums. to me they stand alone among rock bands as far as truly trying to be artists (love it or hate it) and at the same time managing to sell albums....really impressive....

....but the whole world does not have to love em......i could understand if the singing style (kinda "moan-y/whiny") was not universally loved and the sort of "depressive vibe" was also a turn off.

so, back to the question....if radiohead is bad....what is good?

I guess you must be talking to me?! I already mentioned Can in passing earlier so that should be enough for you to go on! Great band. Radiohead obviously think so too! Anyway I don't think RH are bad by any stretch of the imagination. In fact I think they are quite good. The Bends is one of the best rock albums of the last 15 years or so and I love it even though I'm not so hot on the sound of the album. I just find it a tad disappointing that they've gone down a musical cul de sac pretty much since then. I also just watched the movie Urgh! with a ton of great bands live at the top of their game and this RH thing pales in comparison. Maybe that's not fair though...

^^

still not sure i get it...

the bends has great tunes....but i still don't see why that means "nude" and "arpeggi" can be considered a cul de sac by comparison.

as far as urgh.....sure, invisible sex and ub40 and skafish are dandy.....but not sure this means radiohead is somehow "less good" than how any of those bands play. their objectives are different....and the experiments radiohead have been up to since departing brit rock are full of interest.

either way...always good to hear multiple perspectives.

Cul de Sac? OK Computer? That album is a modern classic and far superior to The Bends imo. The Bends is alright for straight up indie rock but they have grown with every album since then. Radiohead is a modern day Beatles or Pink Floyd.

I think the idea Radiohead are exploring revolutionary territory is becoming way too overblown.
I think they are OK. I have nothing against them.
But you'd think no previous band had ever mixed electronics, drum machine sounds, ethereal guitar fx and analogue synths with rock music before.
It was done in the 70's and again in the late 80's.
And I think there are more out there artists doing it now.

Radiohead are good.......god they ain't.

Purely on a songwriting basis The Bends is far better. OK Computer sounds better but that's about it. And let's not get carried away here: this band are nowhere compared to the Beatles or Floyd.

Guess we will have to agree to disagree. You have an "opinion" as do I. Nothing dogmatic.
