The 610 is a strange box to get a handle on, in terms of gain-staging. But there's is enough headroom for pretty much everything. Start with the little knob at -10dB, and the big knob at 0. Oh, and make sure the compressor is set to unity. Start pushing the big knob up; if you can get it all the way up to 10 without any hair, set the little knob to -5 and repeat the steps with the bigger knob. At some point, you'll find the sound of pushing the tubes most pleasing combined with the ideal output, and you can stop fiddling around. If you're still coming across an instance where there ain't enough headroom, try throwing an in-line pad between the mic and the amp. It'll be cheaper than buying a new pre...

Good luck.
