My wife acted very quickly and we STILL missed out on the seating...only the back lawn was available, so, we went ahead and payed way too much for decent seats off of ebay!

I figure, I've been a fan since Pablo. They never come to Florida. We were about ready to drive to Atlanta the next time they came. This may be my 1 and only time to see them, so....

i'm pretty sure that's what everyone here wants as well. your post sets up quite a few arbitrary polemics that don't seem representative of what anybody else is actually advocating.

the question, as i see it, is *how* do they perform their art, and does that performance speak to you. reasonable people can disagree about where those lines are drawn and how effective they are, but it's difficult to connect thru conversation when alternative points of view are distorted in the process of being dismissed.

UBK,

There was nothing aggressive about my response.

I just have a problem with this:

"that's how i see it as well. the performance was a picture-perfect re-creation of a picture-perfect artifice. i love it when live music gets real, when it expands beyond the structure of the recording and molts into something only the real-time present moment can allow for."

The experience of a musical moment is something that is entirely personal, regardless of whether it is recorded or live.

What i chose to dismiss was your experience of reality related to live music getting real, because there is quite simply no way for me to discuss it, as it is not my reality.

The Conan show, for me personally, made it feel as if I could just reach out after the performance and hand Thom a glass of wine and have a chat and a chuckle. All of this because i found the performance utterly inviting.

The questions (plural) for me are: "How" and "How well".

Lastly, my own approach to music is that it is another language through which to communicate. Understanding the meaning of its words and the structure of its grammar are absolutely paramount in selecting the right words and structures to communicate what it is you wish to say. As a result, some music will obviously "speak" differently to different people. For some it is a miscommunication altogether. A recording like "In Rainbows" communicates to me directly. Or at least that's how it feels. The right words chosen within the right structures. And the performance on Conan satisfied that for me.

When i wish to experience masters of re-interpretations of communication, I will listen to Coltrane, Dolphy, Zorn, Coleman.

Great thread and thanks for the video link.

Love Radiohead
Love Bird and The Bee
Love Wilco (Yankee Hotel Foxtrot)

So I guess I'm in good company.

I've been a Radiohead fan since 14 years old when I first saw their video for "Just" off "The Bends". They can do no wrong in my book. It's been interesting to watch their progression over the years.

I loved the video. It kept my attention the entire time. Their last two album aren't nearly as provocative as their previous stuff... it's more about subtlety, mood and atmosphere. I love the song and the live performance. The tune gave me a strange feeling of deja vu ... almost as if I was there with them in a previous time and place...

Perhaps it need not be stated so explicitly, but I'll say it again: I respect everyone's musical opinion that differs from mine.

I think you all agree with me on this, but every once in a while, stating the obvious is a good thing.

The subjectivity of perception of music is truly amazing.
