DB,
When you get a chance can you explain what's going on with the drums that is creating distortion? The drums break up in such a pleasant way and still retain clarity. Is it driving the channels on the console? "Let the Flames Begin" is the one that it stands out to the most for me. It sounds great whatever it is!

Its room comp

It is a combinaton of Mono and stereo room spanking through the SSL 4000 and a pack of ADR stereo comps.
Also a transient designer just in case you were not sure if it was distorted enough.

Hey Tyson,

Check out http://allmusic.com/.
They have lots of information about who did what on many records.

WOW

Allmusic is a joke, they left out the bass player, a few engineers and me. they suck. I would say they have one tenth of the records I worked on.

If not triggered at least beat detective edited. Sounds that way to me anyway.

Beat detective???

I rehearsed Zac really hard, his hands bled. He played to a click. He tore most of the record up and played in time extremely well.

Anything that was adjusted was slightly nudged, and musically completed by hand. All courtesy of the musicality and expertise of Dan Korneff.

Please do not insult us with Beat Detective, unless of course you time is perfect, which I highly doubt.

We use Nuendo.

Even if it had been highly edited, replaced, sampled, beat detectived, auto tuned, etc etc. Who cares? it sounds good does it not?

I'll be running sound for the side stage when they come to Cleveland later this month. I haven't gotten the chance to see them live yet. From what I've heard they seem pretty tight, perhaps nothing earth-shattering but they do the genre well. Just because the pop rock/punk/emo/whatever genre gets a lot of radio play doesn't mean it's the only style of music with artists that sound the same. A lot of blues and jazz musicians have similar styles, all depends on what you're more familiar with.

Sorry guys, I wish I could contribute some useful info about the record but you've already stumbled upon more then I know.

David, the production of Paramore - Riot is great! Personally I like the "sound", the production, more than the music, haha.

I have some questions.
How many overhead tracks did you use? Or how many tracks that captured the cymbals?

Did you use some kind of gate for the snare drum?
The snare drum is sick! GREAT job. How

What amps did you use? Both guitars and bass. Cabs? Mics and mic replacement?
What mic did Hayley use?

Many questions, I know, but I really appreciate answers from you.

+1

Although I have to say Crush Crush Crush is a sexy little song with a seriously catchy hook...

Why does everyone 'hate' on this band and their record that Ben did so much? It sounds great! And, I unfortunately agree with David in his declaration that you can hear the distinctness of the hits of the drums when not engulfed in guitars or vox.

To note, I remember listening to this record in my car and mentioning to my now ex-girlfriend that whoever mixed the drums especially on this record really nailed it!

I just hope that the band's musical maturation doesn't get in their way during the writing/recording process of their next record.

obviously she was of another opinion...

nah, seriously, we all say silly things when we're in love...

I don't like the drum sound very much but it fits the songs and if it fits the songs that drum sound is fine. I ain't got a problem with samples these day.
it's pretty extreme on this record but as said before...

We have been together for over 6 years, and no we do not hold hands.

We sometimes switch and Dan and I do vocals and guitars and Kato and John edit after drums. We have also been known to switch everything around and different people do different things. BUT most of the time its the first scenario.

Everyone has extensive training from being an assistant to engineering to making lunch. Everyone is a gear nut and we all have a lot of gear between us, ok Tons.
They all built their own computers except for me.

I turn on my mac (the only one in the house) with a push of a button.

Right now we just got a margarita making machine and Mitch our studio "keeper" will be learning the finer craft of making the perfect cocktail.

I am mixing Underoath with Dan currently, They are great guys and made a darn Heavy record we all like. Hope you do too!
We got a new vacrac this week, that piece is very nice and even.

QUOTE=fooman;2039942]I just gotta say, this thread is ****ing awesome.
These dudes should have one of them guest thingy forums.... get some of the guys from that NJ studio and give them a forum for a week!

How do you guys split up the work... DB said that each guy has his specialty I think earlier in this thread.
[/quote]

I have 1 question..have you ever been involved with a record where you did not have to edit the drums...and if so..what do you think is the reason that everything gets edited these days..what ever happened to playing strait through!!

I am by no means a great engineer..I record mostly my own music..but I do keep playing ove and over untill I get it right all the way through!!

Is it a time thing?

Thanks!!
