I have to know, was there any sub synth (dbx 120, Kosmos, etc) used on drums? I hear something on the kick on the song Crush, especially in the prechorus where the lyrics are "....Crush...crush, crush, 2,3,4." The curiosty is killing me. Thanks for all you info. in regards to this project. I love it when someone is willing to come on and give a blow by blow of what went down during a session for those interested.

I had been enjoying these songs on the radio, but it was when I saw them performing live on tv when I had to go out and buy the album. It was really refreshing to see non-jaded rock stars actually enjoying themselves up there and having fun. They seem to have little or no attitude (unlike some of the posers, uh I mean, posters here).

You really hear the SSL in these mixes. It's almost 80s classic in that regard. I wouldn't mind a little more bite but it's nice and compressed and very pro. I didn't find it grating on the ears.

I think this is one of the most refreshing bands in recent memory and I congratulate stereomixer on this huge success.

Wow a lot of Questions...

Thanks so much for all the questions, I will try and answer some of them on a day off. Right now I am finishing mixing two young Bands Nural and The Urgency. Then I mix Underoath and then start producing and mixing the next Breaking Benjamin.
A lot of the questions here are truly great and I can tell there are a lot of serious Engineers and Producers here. I may not have all the answers you want and if I do not I apologize in advance. I will however try and get the right answers.

As I previously said I work with three truly incredible engineers and editors. They have been with me for many years and we have made many records as a team. I started with them when they were all quite young. Each guy has an expertise and brings so much musicality to the records we make. They are my dream team.

It also really helps to own your own studio as many of you do. Knowing the room and the gear is so important in developing your sound. It is such a great reference point to start any mix or recording.

I am a member of many forums and discussion groups, I really lke the honesty and open attitude they bring. I really am not one for immaturity, If I ignore you its probably because you have embarrassed yourself in front of everyone.

Making records today is serious business, one that takes many hours of dedication and focus. Editing and recording are all moving at such a fast rate that we all have to keep on top of everything to stay on our game.

I have used this forum a few times to gain knowledge, the people that helped me were always respectful and kind. This community works.

Having said that, I have made a lot of records before Riot and quite a few after. I hope to make many more.
Thanks again for all your kind words.
David

Considering what's out there today, Paramore is a cut above most of the 'chick singer pop rock bands' I've heard lately.

Originality? No

Creativity? No

Good Attitude? Yes

Energetic show and good performance? Yes.

Album? Sounds okay-probably because Howard didn't do it.

They still seem a bit like a FlyLeaf imitation-who I happen to like-at least live. I don't like what Howard did to their album. (Lacey is a very nice person, interesting to talk with and a great performer with a great attitude)

Just my worthless opinon

David - Love your work on this album. Sounds really great! Huge drums, rocking mix. Love it.

I think it's great that these guys are just teenagers and already have a great career going for them and some sweet and catchy tunes. Good on them.

Since some of our posts got whacked - I'll repost this:

In the latest issue of DRUM! magazine - there's a whole article on Zac Ferro (drummer of Paramore). Most of the article is about the time spent in the studio with Mr Ben, and his whole approach to getting the best performances out of the band.

Good stuff and worth a read.

db & hol

just to add to the thoughts... i can say from experience that ben and his parters in crime are some of the hardest working guys i've ever met. they're in there 16 hours a day, 6 days a week.... i had the pleasure of doing a month of guitars with them last year... kato, bender, dan, and everyone else there are the best guys you could hope to work with on a record. i've also got to say that i was well-challenged while i was there. i definitely left a better player than i was when i arrived.

dave, good to see you on here man.

BTW, i stuck it out, and things have been like new since last fall.... should i expect an "i told you so"?

:)

We stuck the vocal thru a Gates SA-39 and cranked it up!!! It's one of those old compressors from the 50's that's the size of a small oven.

Ok so I will just say that its the band that is not dynamic. What a safe, boring turd. This is everything I hope to never do. I'm really sorry if I offend but, Jesus Lord!!!!!! This is what's wrong with music today. Yeah I feel very strongly and you know what, I'll just say AAAAARGH!!!! It is massively over computed and engineered and just let a damn performance breath! It doesn't have to try to rip my face off, I get it already. On the other hand, you would probably hear my stuff, which by the way has never even come remotly close to a listen by more than 5 people...I've never had or felt the pressure of making a commercial attempt...and um...say 'what a turd'. I can't stand perfection! Let the music flow....

Smile well ok

Shostakovich, its not a problem. You can hate on it and call it crap. BUT, at least we do not call ourselves pretentious names and leave crap lying all over the mixing desk like in your icon. Dude clean that room!!!
Love,
Debussy.

I'd love to hear some of the AMAZING sonic masterpieces you are making over there. Why dont you pop up a song or two so we can learn from the master.

Do you use the "fridge" on just vox?
