Monitor stands or place on desk?

For home recording, do you like to put your monitors on your desk? I have the Auralex MoPAD which helps the lows a lot. I kind of want to have some more separation between my monitors so I don't really want to keep them on my desk. they are about 3' from each other right now. What do you suggest I do? Make a makeshift stand? or put each monitor on 2 separate tables in front of me?

Mounting them on stands is the way to go. You can get them at ear level this way, and it frees up the real estate on your desk for things like bigger screens and other fun stuff.

Is buying a couple stands out of the question at this point? If so, I'd say save up a bit and buy some stands ASAP. It is very important to place your monitors "correctly" (i.e. height of speakers as it relates to listening position, distance between speakers, distance to listening position, etc).

I don't think I would be able to use my moPADs on speaker stands though. The MoPADs can be put at a downward or upward angle so the tweeter can point toward your ears. I just want to find a way to have some more separation. So you're saying monitor stands would be a good idea? what are some decent/cheap ones?

I've got these coming in soon. Should be here within a few days actually. I'm getting MoPads as well. My only concern is stability (I have a big, clumsy yellow lab who occasionally gets into my room), so I may end up screwing them into the floor if I can find a way to do it.

I'll try to remember to respond in this thread with my opinion on them. Or if you remember, PM me in a week or so.

MoPads come with a thin wedge piece which when used makes a flat surface, no angle either way.
