Classic Albums: The Doors

On VH1 right now...I think the DVD is out on the 22nd.
Like the others in the series it's a *must see*.
Very interesting seeing Bruce Botnick sitting at an Digi Icon soloing Morrison's vocals.
Looks like he's in his house.
I never realized how much reverb was on Morrison's voice.
Plus how great the music sounds, how much space in the mix, yet sounds so full.
Beautiful.

BTW - the "Classic Albums: Plastic Ono Band" is out on the 22nd as well.

Yeah, Dr. Feelgood would be a good edition of Classic Albums. Crue passed out in the corner and Bob Rock playing everything.

You can pre-order this on Amazon now. Its only $8.99 on pre-order. Thats one of my top ten albums of all time. I would really like to see Bowies Ziggy Stardust and Hendrix's Electric Ladyland, too.

Thanks. I also found a youtube video with Eddie Kramer discussing Hendrix's 2nd album Axis Bold as Love. Now, we need to Led Zeppelin 2, and Sgt Pepper.

Hate to say it but the Doors sucked. Soundwise and the crappy keyboard they bought from Grants or Woolworth's. Always hated them...

I was never able to achieve that bad a sound. And the drunk singer sounded like sh*t too.

I am sorry and apologize to fans but I never had even the remotes like for them. How they ever got famous is probably related to the times.

I need AllenCollins to back me up on this one LOL! They were way worse than Pearl Jam.

Well, for the people who liked it, Jim Morrison's voice had a scary, woozy darkness-- always in the service of solid, workmanlike blues. If you were following the story, there was always an outlandish, wry, gutteral cry that wrapped everything up-- he was heroic, in a limited way, straining against the limits of the day.

It's amazing how little you had to do to be heroic and defy convention, then. His moaning and theatrics happened in an atmosphere where it was all taken very seriously, it's hard to really appreciate if you weren't there.

Ah, the stuff aged quickly though. "Light My Fire" started out as almost a new agey anthem, but quickly ground itself into insignificance and camp. The timeless stuff is the simpler, less ponderous-y stuff. L.A. Woman. And then he died-- perfect timing.

no. Riders On The Storm was Elvis' bass player Jerry Scheff.

you do know LA Woman was all Langevin solid-state console, Vernier? do you like that as much as the early albums?

I'm with you on the comparison point... beautifully recorded... tube or solid-state.

I'm sure i read in the ray manzarek autobiography that la woman was recorded on an old valve console, that by that point all the big studios had switched to solid state, so there were a few good ex-studio valve consoles available for hire at the time(it was recorded in a house, rather than at sunset sound). However, morrison hotel might have been done on a solid state desk, as it was recorded around the time that the switch was made.

I like the earlier ones. Also like Buffalo Springfield Again, which was made at Sunset.

Bruce Botnick, Sunset Sound, 1967

Btw, Botnick said the transistor console installed at Sunset in 1970 was built in Europe. Langevin was USA.

Morrison was an artist. As with many, but not all artists, he was self indulging to the point of self destruction. When a new Doors song hit the AM radio many people were moved in a big time way. I don't think that he was thinking he would speak for the times-- I think that he was the times, at least a portion thereof. I saw the Doors numerous times and considered it theater as well as music. There was a dark theme and I would feel as if I were in a room with Edgar Allen Poe. He also challenged immorality before it became fashionable.

In the 60s there was a great deal of darkness and denial. Our government sold its brand of black and white. Many people were afraid to think and feel for themselves. As a young man during this period of time it seemed that all choices were the extremes. The choices that I saw were-- Viet Nam to kill in the name of God and Country or be cloistered in a small apartment with close friends, a Doors LP, & hooka, or both.

For those who don't care for the Doors' music there is no need to apologize unless you are truly sorry. This is just a forum about personal opinion. When I read that someone thinks the Doors' music is crap it is obvious that we don't share the same definition for the words "music" or "art." To dislike someone's music or art in some cases may be a mark of the artists success.

Yes Morrison was a drunk and a junkie. I am totally against addiction and consider it a serious disease-- but that has nothing to do with his artistry.

Yes. It's the texture of the voice that makes it sound so big, of course great gear and somebody like Botnick were also factors.

But I think that despite all 'cultural' differences, Morrsion was the same type of singer that Elvis and Sinatra were: Velvety, big tones and a TOTAL commitment to the performance. And most importantly: dynamics.
