Thread Starter | Mini console for 500 format units? (A-designs)
Hi all. I'm so new here I squeak. Have tried searching about this with no joy so hopefully I've not missed something..
Does anyone manufacture a mini-console that holds 500 format stuff (API, Avedis etc..) like this one A-designs were supposedly making according to someone in this forum: Sound On Sound Forum
I saw the photos and kinda fell in love:
Wondering if A-Designs are planning to see this through. Would be a great project to knock something like this up - if I had any skill whatsoever to do so..
Great forum, glad to be on board! thumbsup

Hi, Jack,
- We at Pete's Place Audio (a division of A Designs Audio) are currently working on this. Our best guess on completion is to have something available to show at the AES in October. This is no guarantee, however. This particular product has morphed into several different products. We still trying to narrow the choices and determine the best to go with. Jon Erickson, Justin and Pan60 all are putting a great effort forward to getting this product completed. When it does come out, we will be riding the coattails of A Designs to help us get on our feet!
If you email me through West Hills Pete's Place - I will add you to our long list of people inquiring about this product. When it does become available, we will be sending an email to each individual, notifying them of the details.
Thank you very much for your interest.

PS - Jon, is it possible to put together a pictorial for Tim? He seems a bit confused. But, make it simple. 2 or 3 pictures should do it. LOL

Why are there like 6 different A-Designs mic preamps? Could they not make one good one and roll with it?
The mixer looks pretty cool but where's the center section/2-track stuff?

Jon Erickson here. I am on the design and build team for the Mk8. I will try and clarify whats going on.
The Mk8 accepts a total of 16 single 500 series modules. All of the module slots can be bypassed or engaged from a button on each channel's corresponding routing module. This allows the user to have 1,2 or no modules in each channel strip while maintaining full routing and fader control of the signal running through that channel. No modules at all? Yes, the routing itself can be the first point of entry and can provide all of its key functions. This becomes especially handy for two space modules so that the loss of one space doesnt negate an entire channel and for users with a limited number of modules on hand.
There is an insert control on each routing module that allows the user to kick the signal out (and back in) of the units rear DB25 insert points. Perfect for patching in external rackmount equipment. Perhaps a user already has an 8 channel 500 rack, they could insert this entire rack into one of the insert points to expand the overall module slots to 24 slots. 32 slots by using 2 racks. The bypass and insert system also allows the user to use the mk8s 500 slots individually and independent from the routing and fader system as if they had two 8 channel racks. Great for tracking. Our goal was to give maximum flexibility and not tie the user into a set mode of working.
The routing module from top to bottom:
Module rows 1 and 2 bypass controls
Module rows 1 and 2 insert controls
Buss 1-8 Assigns
LR Buss assign
Stereo Aux 1 control with pre/post switch
Stereo Aux 2 control with pre/post switch
Pan control with pan defeat
Unity switch that bypasses fader for a locked unity gain setting
Fixed level pad switch
Phase reverse switch
Mute Switch
Solo Switch
100mm Fader
The rear of the unit has
XLR inputs 1-8 with linked db25
Row 1 Insert Send and Return. DB25 Balanced
Row 2 Insert Send and Return. DB25 Balanced
Direct outputs. DB25 Balanced Line Level
Buss Outputs. DB25 Balanced Line level
Aux/Solo Outputs. DB25 Balanced Line Level
LR Main Output. XLR
Power is provided by a beefy external power supply with phantom power.
Why no master section? First off let me say that we are developing a master section with 8 busses and LR control, slots for more modules, control room features, aux returns with the ability to accept multiple mk8s. But...from the beginning of this build we have been reinterpreting how a unit like this could sync with the modern studio instead of simply making another traditional console which, frankly, is too expensive to build, sell and buy and doesn't address the myriad work styles of today's engineer. The Mk8 will allow a 500 series user to get into the game much more affordably by syncing with the gear that most studios already have.
Examples:
Bussing? Patch into a DAW, External Summing device or small mixer....
Monitoring? DAW, mixer or dedicated monitoring device....
The unit is made 100% here in Southern California, USA and like everything else from A-Designs/Petes Place is built for a lifetime + of service. A-Designs/Pete's Place is a leader in all things 500 series and we think this product will truly take it to the next level.
We have a prototype at the A-Designs Booth at AES. Stop by and take a look....

Bottom right 2 look like they might be some new A-designs thingies (compressors?).
Did I win 1 of each?
As a nod to another thread:
there's my bigger rack, right there!

Then it occurred to me... perhaps they are Quad Eight modules, from which the Eisen logo and LILPEQr appearance were inspired. In other words, maybe PP/AD have licensed the QE name from Ken Hirsch and are reproducing old QE circuits in new packaging.

the new Electrodyne gear ( the pre and Eq P ), is owned by Ken at Orphan Audio.
these ( as i understand ), will be made by Pete's Place and will exactly like the originals!
as well, this is the original, Electrodyne logo.
you guys and gals have got to stop by and check these out!
and they are in the 500 format.
i am so stoked!

I guess this is one that I don't get - what's the difference between this and a 500 rack with a patchbay (except the fader and some bussing) except for, I'm assuming, cost? I guess the layout will work for some, but for me I'd rather have them in the rack instead of in a bulky thing on top of my desk. I'm sure it will look much cooller when five of them are lined up and installed next to each other to look more like a console.

This thing is more of a console than most summing boxes, let alone a traditional 500 series rack + patchbay. Not exactly sure what they're plan is for a master section though.

Yeah, I understand - I guess I just don't have the visualization skills to imagine the the master section, so my response is from just looking at the one shot. All the same, if I needed all the bussing, I would much rather just get a small console and then use my 500 stuff as inserts. Unless your mixing the same band, same instruments all the time, you're going to spend a lot of time swapping the modules around to get your eq's and compressors on the tracks that you want them so I would rather know that I have a solid eq on every channel and be ability to easily patch it any flavor from my 500 rack that I would want. Don't get me wrong, I'm not dissing the product as I am sure that it will be just the right thing for some - it just doesn't make sense to me based on my needs.

Allright, i just figured it out. I don't think that it's as handy as other options if your 500 collection is mainly singles and doubles of pieces that you really like on specific things. However, if you were in the market for a console (mixing, tracking, whatever) and really loved one eq (say an API) and one compressor (say the Chandler Germ) and one mic pre (say the MA5) buying 8 to 24 of them all would make for a pretty sick custom console. Obviously, there's plenty of room for some variety, but just being able to make an Neve/API/EMI hybrid console would be pretty slick. I retract my earlier statement, I now see the potential (I probably won't be able to afford the potential, but I see it).
