I tried the Josephson C42 on vocals this weekend...

hi guys and gals,
just thought i'd share this (mostly because it surprised me), but this last weekend i was tracking vocals and doing the usual 'mic shootout' on this guy's vocals and i thought just for fun i'd throw up the josephson c42 into the mix. well, it just so happened that the c42 was the best choice on this guy's vocals (other contenders were the soundelux u-195, shure sm-7, cad m-9, shure sm-57, beyer m-201, etc..). it seemed to sit right in the mix where i wanted it to. i should mention that in 'solo' it might not have been a 'hands down' kinda choice, but in the mix, this instance, this day, blah, blah... it was way cool.
anyway, if you get a chance to try it.. (it seems easy to dismiss as the josephson is generally associated with drums and acoustic instruments), it may surprise you (as it did me, i've used it on a second vocalist since then).
just thought i'd share....

I was cutting some acoustic guitar tracks a few days ago with a 42 and I noticed how good the guitar players voice sounded when speaking in between takes. I thought "Hey this mic might sound really good on some backgroud vocals" I'll have to try it now. Thanks for the tip!

Wow, i've really got to get a pair of these now!

My good friend is housemates with Mr. Josephson himself, maybe I can meet him and get him to post on this board. With all the hype about the C42, i'm sure there are some other great things he's working on.

Been using it as stereo pair for choir and background vocals application on a catholic choir and a background vocal for a rock band.

Definitely an air mic!

On one hand, I can certainly sympathize with the approach of "Hey, I can't hear any difference, so why should I pay that much?". On the other, I wonder why anyone who can't hear a difference is recording, mixing, or producing records.

the km84 has been my vocal mic of choice for a couple projects ive been working on. theres really no reason why a sd mic cant sound just as fine for vocals...

So it´s just no me then

My studiopartner often sings scratch tracks using the KM184 (which he uses for his acoustic guitar), and some of them ends up on the record!
