Where to buy Canare Cable...

Hey all..

I've been looking at and reading about Canara cable for awhile now and am interested in buying some. I can't seem to find anything about where it is available for purchase though. I would like to buy some online (the Canare website doesn't look like it has a "shopping cart")... but if there is no place online, I'll go to a store. I am from Canada, so a place that is available for purchase from Canada would be nice. I'd like to stay away from Long and Mcquade if possible, because, if it is even available from there, it won't be in stock and would have to be ordered, and they would probably end up ordering the wrong thing. For you Americans out there... think "Canadian Guitar Center" and you'll know what I mean.

Also... should I use the 4 conductor stuff for main snake, or the two? And should I use two or four conductor for my preamp/effects ins and outs?

Thanks a lot!

Redco is where I buy mine. I don't now if they ship to Canada but I'm guessing they probably would.

The rule of thumb is that 2 conductor has lower capacitance but the quad has added noise reduction. I'd use the quad only where you need it, like mic to preamp, if you in fact need it there.

Get the 2 conductor as much as possible unless you have some EM or RF interference. It just plain sounds better than the quad cable, as the 2 conductor is more open sounding. Even better is the Canare 206 AES cable, but used for analog applications it sounds incredible. I use it for all my critical applications like my mastering chain and for mic to preamp.

look for NY Pro Audio on ebay... incredible. 25' Canare XLR (gold / quad / neutriks) for $25.

This is interesting, and it makes me wonder about the rest of your subjective assessments...

If you can provide any reproducible evidence (plotted on charts as opposed to using subjective listening) of more "openness" in practice for different models of these cables at line or mic level, I'd be happy to attempt reproduce the results, and I'd buy $400 worth of cable from you as reward if I can.

I do currently have a pair of Canare quads that I use frequently at mic level...

Honestly, I don't really care if you buy it from me or not. I'm not a dog to be thrown a bone. I didn't say that with the hopes someone would buy some cable. The analog two conductor has lower capacitance than the quad, the digital 206 has lower capacitance than the regular analog 2 conductor. Buy 15 foot of each from Redco or HaveInc or whoever, wire it yourself, and track 8 or more tracks (or even two), if you hear a difference then buy some cable direct from the factory. If you don't hear a difference, then don't worry about it...I know what I hear, it works for me. I didn't say it was the difference between great and shit...and just because I hear a bit of an improvement, doesn't give you the right to suggest that my 6 years and 4800 of posts here and 15 years of engineering experience are in question (which is what it sounds like you are suggesting in the first line I quoted from you). It's pretty pompous IMO, and not really in the spirit of the forum. All this shit is subjective. We're not talking about $100 IEC cables. We're talking about cable that's between 2 and 4 dollars per foot.

Another one for MarkerTek, and Redco's great, too. Chris at Redco will do anything he has to get things done right and quick.

I'd use the two conductor in the rack, etc., but if the snake is going to be running in uncertain electrical conditions (i.e. around lighting equipment, distros...), definitely look at the quad stuff.

I find the green Canare more open than the red.
