Euphonix MC Mix with ProTools?

I know this has been addressed in more general threads but I was wondering if there are any ProTools users, primarily more professional, large-scale project ProTool HD users, using the MC Mix with any success. Mostly interested in fader/pan/mute automation but am interested to see how it integrates with more of the advanced control options such as plugin automation, send automation, custom fader groups, etc.

I just spoke to a real knowledgeable guy at Sweetwater who owns one himself. He likes it so much that he may not get the 'control' expansion he had preordered.

He works in PT. He said the latest rev is working great in PT. Seems the fader automation, automation write mode, pan, mute, fader banking (to get to all the tracks in a PT session), Aux send automation and fader flip, as well as some other limited features are working great. He said their eucon? their software is a little buggy sometimes but getting better with each release. He had gotten this as an expandable replacement for the command 8 and he now likes just the 8 fader more than the command 8 for some reason.

And he answers his phone! Imagine that... lol

Euphonix

I am also a PTHD user interested in how well the Euphonix Artist Series are working. If I thought the MC Control and the MC Mix worked well I would buy both in a minute. The Artist Series stuff is very inviting, but I just don't have it in me to be a beta tester.

I would really like to hear from anyone who is using PT and thinks that the Euphonix gear works fairly flawlessly. I am playing with the idea of getting a Digi D-Command. Not only is the D-Command commanding a pretty price, it would also take up a big chunk of my working surface.

I am mainly interested in a controller for PT that will give me fairly mindless control of my plugins.

With Pro Tools it works using HUI emulation I believe it only goes as deep as HUI would go.

Anyone have any more Euphonix MC Mix paired with ProTools HD experience to share?

I have a MCU that is on it's last leg. Looking for a new controller with a footprint similar to or smaller than the MCU. Just looking for decent fader, pan, solo, mute control. The basics. Must be on par with or better than MCU though.

After all I've read/heard about shaky faders, cheap build quality, etc., I'd really love to see and actually demo one of these in store or at someone's studio. Anybody have one running on a PT's HD (or even LE) machine here in the Chicago area? As much as I hate GC, I'd even buy one there if they'd only out one out on the floor. Curiously...they don't do that ????

Thanks,

steve

I had an older model MCU that worked well with PTHD with respect to faders, pans, solo, and mute as well as transport functions. The MCU didn't work well for me in terms of adjusting plugin parameters. I purchased a Euphonix and put a great deal of energy into it and got even more frustrated by temporary successes. It was never reliable. I went back to the old MCU with much more appreciation for it. I now have a D Command that has been absolutely, totally, without question rock from minute one and is basically plug and play. If all you are after is fader, pan, solo, & mute and are content with the mouse and keyboard for all else, then I would stick with the MCU. Personally, I prefer using the mouse and keyboard as little as possible.

Steve

I've had the Euphonix MC Mix since May and I love it. I use it mainly for Post. It's quick, responsive and very simple to use. It integrates very well with my system. They fixed the shakey faders problem with firmware updates. It doesn't do it AT ALL anymore. Mainly I use it for volume/pan automation purposes. You can recall/control any plug in from the board but I am so used to doing it with the mouse that I hardly ever go there.

I haven't tried every single feature with it yet, but you know how it is - I'll get to it someday!

Sorry I'm not in the Chicago area.

MC Mix with ProTools HD Success....

I went for a MC Mix based on Mandrax report. It just arrived today. After installing EuCon software v1.2, I downloaded v1.2.2 and installed it. Plugged in the Ethernet cable, powered it up, opened a session in protools. Was running within 5 mins. So far this thing is great. Not expecting to do much plugin editing and things of that sort. The rotary encoders and faders work as well if not better than my MCU that'll be retired very soon. and the display is WAY clearer than the blue one on my MCU.

I just wanted to report on this for those ProTools users that have been hesitant to get into one of these. So far I have nothing but good things to report with regards to the basic operations (faders, pans, sends, mute, solo, etc.)

My PT's setup consists of PT HD3 (non accel) PT v7.4cs7 OS 10.4.11(?) PowerMac G5 2 x 2.5Ghz. 4 GB RAM.....

I picked this thing up through Music123.com While they were a little slow to clear the order and ship, I only had to pay $800 for a brand new unit. (They are doing an instant $200 discount if you spend $1k) Plus free shipping.

With regards to the MC Mix unit itself. It doesn't feel as cheap as I expected it to. Definitely not built like a tank, but it'll do the job as long as it's taken care of. (Fingers crossed) It sits nicely above the armrest of my console right next to my trackball, below the master section. No longer do I need the MCU on wheels that gets moved around all the time. Yeah.

I'll report back when I get into it more.

I'm using it in conjunction with the new Neve 5088 to mix the Smashing Pumpkins 20th Anniversary Tour shows. Specifically, to submix things that are sent a stereo pair of faders on the mixing board, such as background vocals or aux percussion. I like it a lot though it sometimes cuts out and I have to reboot. The faders are nice but not as nice as the neve

Anyone else with experience to PTHD / Euphonix MC MIX? How about PT 8, plugin mapping?

Again, I'm only using it with ProTools HD v7.4 but it's solid here. Fader, Pan, Mute and Solo automation and control is a breeze. Fader banking is simple and moves quickly. I find if I need to automate a plugin it does the job well enough. However, for quick tweaks of plugin parameters etc, it's still easier for me to use the mouse. I've tried getting used to doing plugin parameter and send level automation with the "Flip" function. But the faders act completely different in flip mode than they do in fader mode. Perhaps I'm doing something wrong.

But for the most part this thing works great for me. Smokes the MCU I used to use.

I haven't used it on my PT8 rig yet. The plugin mapping on 7 is fine, but as with other surfaces it's often easier and faster to do plugin stuff the "manual" way.

So are you're saying that plugin mapping does work with Euphonix MC? I'm thinking plugin stuff like EQ and compressors.

I have an MC control and MC Mix on a 003 rack PT8

I've had a LOT of crashes from the eucontrol software. It's a total pain in the ass.

Protools intermittently decides not to recognise the devices and when it does fire up, the auto-mapping of parameters leaves a lot to be desired.

I've been operating around the mixer because it's been too much hassle. When I get another moment to look up a few operational things on it perhaps I'll get to grips with it a bit more... but it's not been too impressive for me.

The volume automation seems quite precise on Protools, though I wish they could get direct digidesign interface status so we could get the kind of detail you get on Logic.

My main gripe is that it just doesn't feel very intuitive!

I've had my MC Mix for somewhere between 6 months to a year now...

Faders, solo, pans, and mute automation work perfect, feels very nice. Also I use flip mode for aux sends for creating headphone mixes and reverb; very nice!

I never edit plugins with it though, or add plugins to a track with it; feels too clunkly doing that, and the parameters of plugins seem to be mapped completely randomly.

Here's a answer from Euphonix regarding plugin mapping:

"Currently, there is no custom mapping for plug ins on the controllers. The order you see on the MC'c is the exact same order your DAW is publishing. This is a feature request that we are aware of.

Other EQ plug ins will have a different order, but it should publish to the controllers if you are accessing it from the insert section on Pro Tools."

HELP!

Everything is working except for, my mcmix seems to be in fader flip mode, permanently?

I can't get any of the faders to control volume.

Only the rotary encoders are doing that.

Ive tried pressing and messing with the fader flip function, but can't seem to figure this out.

Any help?

jeepers.. Just used Logic 8 with my MC mix..

I'm seriously considering using Logic a whole lot more!

I can drop files into Logic (no Looong load times), bounce things around happily (in and out of an programs I like), and expect no crashes! PLUS - the mix and control work seamlessly!

I am digging up this old thread to see if anyone has more good/bad things to say about the MC Mix working with Pro-Tools HD.
