Dust Brothers studio "The Boat" - wow! Anyone recorded there?

Looks like a great place with a shitload of desireable vintage stuff including an ex-Air Studios Neve desk circa 1969.

Was gigging in Barcelona with this new Soy/BMG French band called Empyr who recorded their album there with Ken Andrews - lucky buggers got to go there for 2 months! Who says there is a recession in the music biz?!

Looks like "The Boys" are doing pretty well for themselves.

I am actually a little surprised. I like their stuff and they are pretty popular but I didn't think they were making enough cash for a place as decked out as that (pun intended). Good for them.

a friend of mine worked there recently and said it was a good experience, although was very surprised when he opened and listened to the tracks outside. as in, it was shockingly different. i haven't worked there so i can't verify, but i'd just spend some more-than-usual amount of time referencing things you know when you get there.

They've produced some of biggest selling tracks of the last 20 years..

Tone Loc is the highest selling rap single i've read somewhere, also Hanson's Mmbop, Lp's for Beck, Beastie Boys and probably a million others, this is when records really sold..

The Dust Brothers - phew mad respect.. George Martin's Neve console - woah..

ha! hey Bryan, I used to drive by that place all the time before I moved over to Eagle Rock too....... hilarious, I just thought it was some aging, ugly apartment building. Looks nice on the inside though.

That is a really fun looking place. I like the Abbey Road style control room looking down on the main studio. At least it looks neat in the pictures.

Hi

That console was gutted, all the horrid mods ripped out and then reassembled with a 24T custom active monitor section, with P & G faders, three band EQ, and Aux sends with individual switch/pots, by myself as consultant/advisor and Kevin Leonard and crew doing the mods, wire laying and general studio wiring.

No obligation, of course, but nice if it had been mentioned... Adam came on the scene long after we'd finished.

I've loved these guys ever since Paul's Boutique.

For a long time they had a Blackface ADAT as a master clock for all their gear, using ADATsync, I believe. It's only purpose was to clock. They swore by it as a rock solid device.

They also said in an interview I listened to that they couldn't keep up with Beck - that he is an absolute musical genius as far as production and arranging went. It think it was an interview on Morning Becomes Eclectic.

Dan Leroy's 33 1/3 book on the making of "Paul's Boutique" gives a really nice feel for how the Dust Brothers got started making their early hip hop tracks in SoCal, when they were winging it and yet churning out a slew of classic hits. The book is as much about them (and Matt Dike) as it is the Beastie Boys. Definitely worth reading, as are a lot of the 33 1/3 books.

I've always heard there was a 3rd Dust Bro. during this period.

Does anyone know?

Probably Matt Dike, co-founder of Delicious Vinyl and the guy mentioned in the 33 1/3 book I linked to above. I only really know of him through that book, which describes some of the early Delicious story and later how he and the Dust Brothers produced "Paul's Boutique". Towards the end of the book, somebody was quoted as saying that Dike's goal in life had been to make enough money from the music business to be able to disappear and just sit around at home getting high and listening to records all day, and apparently that's exactly what he did.

Hey Byran Its Karl Mike's buddy... I know you are mentioning Mike's experience there. I did 3/4 of the Matt Nathanson record there. I found the control room to be very wierd. I referenced a good bit of stuff and still found it difficult. All in all came out great. Good gear just an old room. I believe it was the home of a radio station at one point. The tracking rooms where the old 50 style squarish dead spaces. Well i should say the main room was. They only had one iso that they used. The other they made the lounge.

Anyway... It was fine.

Hope all is well Byran

Thanks! I had always heard that the 3rd Dust Bro was the guy and preferred to get high all the time and not record any more.

I lived in that Silver Lake neighborhood from 1993 until 2000. Lots of musicians and studios. To my knowledge "The Boat" was never occupied during that period.

Hi

Well, they must have sneaked past you because we installed the console in the late 90's (97/8?) and Dustbrothers have been using it ever since.

John, did you track the Black List Club there as well? There's a little flap about them in another thread. From what I heard in their youtube clips, you're taking them to a new level. Looking forward to hearing your work as usual.

I worked on some bonus tracks for this record here in Paris. The tracks the band cut at The Boat with Ken Andrews sound really great. Talented bunch all around. Nice guys too.

Ben Harper's "Both Sides of the Gun" was done there, tracking and mixing, and it is one of the best sounding records i've listened this year so far. it was released in 2006. great stuff, nice studio.

yeah ben harper did that record there but he ditched the band and played a lot of the stuff himself.....it sounds good but i can't get past the hopeless drumming!!!......beck did 'the information' there but i think they used a heap of samples (like on odelay) and then beck just did some live loops.....i'm sure there are guys who know more about this than me.....they're both great sounding records though!
