Thread Starter | Anyone using the Shure Beta 56a on snare?
I'm interested in this mic for snare drum. Any user pro cons....especially compared with an SM57 or Audix i5?

IIRC its just a a Beta 57 in a more compact casing. My experience with the B57 on snare has been pretty good, not too fussed with it on guitar amps though, a bit too bright for that. |

i have a few of these and find them quite useful. its a work horse and quite useful for getting into tight spots. sharing the same capsule as the B57A, B58A and B52A they're a decent sounding dynamic mic... not too open like condensers so nice and plunky on perussion... I've used them on snare before with great results but ATM the sm57 is mic of choice here...(a few weeks back i couldn't get a sm57 into the drummer's super-ultra-mega-kit but the beta 56 was perfect for poking over the rim. put it snare bottom for a different shape from the top... plus the steel grille means that any wayward stick hits won't destroy the mic. (love the SM57 on snare, but most drummers would prefer to buy cymbals than replacement mics for some reason...
