Chameleon Labs 7720 Stereo Compressor vs. UAD-1 comps.

I'm considering picking up the 7720.

I have two UAD1 cards and the 33609 is really great sounding (IMHO). As are the LA-2A and 1176 plugs.

Will the 7720 give me much better resluts than the UAD1- plugs. My main application will be 2 bus and drum compression.

Thanks!

It will certainly give you different results. The 7720 really isn't a "character" piece. It's fairly transparent and hi-fi sounding. It's not going to make anything sound dirtier or ballsier just by passing signal through it. What it will do though is give you clean SSL-style compression.

I built my own SSL compressor clone. If the 7720 had been available at the time I was going through that exercise, I definitely would have just picked up the Chameleon Labs box and saved myself a bunch of labor.

This is still a bit hush-hush but I bought a 7720 from Joe Maloen JLN Audio after he did a mod to it - sounds awesome.

The difference is amazing.

I couldn't find anything about Joe Maloen or JLN Audio. Could you post a link.

Thanks guys for the input. I'm still open to different thoughts on this.

I've got a 7720 here that I would love to mod, if it can get it a bit dirtier. It's a great piece as is, but I'd love it if the unit had a more aggressive character.

Any info on the mod would be great.

Okay - I visited Joe Malone at the new JLM Audio warehouse yesterday. (Brisbane, Queensland, Australia)
Picked up my 500 series Pre's and an API rack. (Woo hoo)

Just send him an e-mail if you want more info (although it will take a few days for him to reply - trouble with his ISP.)

Joe said they are going to run some audio samples thru the original unit and the modded unit so people can hear the difference - that will be posted on his website.

Hope this helps.
Peace.
