Columbus's recording scene is kind of weird. Prices are all over the map in relation to what the studios offer & there doesnt seem to be one "dominant" studio.

John Schwab, Musicol, Moo Pigface, and Rome Recording are well known in the area and have been around for a while. There are others as well. I havent personally done any work with any of them so I cant really give a suggestion.

Cleveland isn't too far off and there are some pretty nice places there. You can get SSL & Neve rooms for the same prices you find in Columbus... only with SSL and Neves.

Jim Roseberry is in Columbus. I'm not sure of his current studio setup, but he would certainly know who to call if he can't provide a room.

well, i can answer the question. of course i'd need to know more about what you need.

the place i'd recommend most for rock type recording right now is central city recording. ask for andrew. when i'm not doing mixing editing in my own space and require a bigger tracking space i would consider tracking at central city. also i would have recommended workbook, but it seems to be no more. that said, john chinn (former workbook owner) freelance engineers at central city recording so it's all good.

john schwab recording is decent, ask for joe viers.

and last off the top of my head but not least is tom boyer and his space. tom is a great guy who's been at this game a damn long time.

the second post dropped some studio names which older or more modest spaces that i am not in a position to send someone to. there are a ton of little spaces with no more gear than the average band would already have in a rehearsal situation. they are cheap, but not where i'd go. there are a few other better equipped small spaces (blue moon studio's comes to mind) where they have totally decent gear and appear to be able to put out good stuff, but aren't as talked about in the band scene circles which is fine too.

depending on what your friend wants to do i could possibly help, so you are welcome to check out my website as well. at least i can get you directed to the right folks in columbus.

$70/hr for a Control 24 with a 2-610, gamma 8, tg2, and a 273... Kinda steep when you can just take the couple hour drive out to Cleveland and record in a properly constructed SSL4000G+ or Neve 8100 room with 12x the gear run by people with Grammys or top 40 client lists to their name for less.

I'm not saying anything negative about Central City. I'm just saying that room wise if you need a spot to work in as a 1 time thing, then the couple hour drive to Cleveland is the better value.

well, i'm not affiliated with central city per se, but i could also mention that they have an actual plate reverb and some shadow hills kit. i wouldn't look down my nose at their space.

maybe the folks in cleveland can do better, maybe not. it's not entirely about gear anyway.

really, figuring out what the client needs and getting them paired with the right people in the right space has a few dimensions to it besides gear list, although that's part of it. until i know what the client needs i can't add much more, other than to say that the original question was about columbus and i replied with a few reasonable columbus contacts.

Again, I'm not thumbing my nose at Central City. It's really hard to not sound like it when comparing one place to another.

If he absolutely has to stay in Columbus and has the money then maybe Central City is the place. I'm just throwing out what I think is a reasonable suggestion for a reasonable reason.
