I'd say "Hustler" is sensual reading.

Essensially they are all advertising.
I think TapeOp is my current fav entertainment but, far from essensial.

Mix is the worst!
All ads no info.
The "Class of XX" is always noce for some gear masterbation but, I don't think I have read anything of value in that mag in years.

A book I would recommend is "Behind the Glass".

Tape Op is the most real, but essential? What's essential in a zine?

Trust me, Tape Op is interested in ads now too.
No matter which mag, you have to read heavily between the lines IMO.

Although a free magazine that is not interested in ads probably wouldnt survive too long - unless it was funded by the Gates Foundation. I dont mind Tape Ops ads as the mag is free and some of the ads are useful. I think its an entertaining and informative magazine.

In the same vein, I dislike magazines whereby you are really paying for ads - its akin to a pay-per-view channel that showed advertisements 23hrs a day.

I do enjoy the "Classic Tracks" articles in Mix, it's great to hear about the creative process behind stuff that you've heard a million times and then see the track sheet while your listening to it. Makes me wonder what they're gonna do in the future, print the edit window from the Pro Tools session?

"Essential"?

The only magazine that fits that criteria would be "Fine Woodworking - Taunton Press".

I agree dpasch. this is a great book. Usually I read Mix...the article about bass tracks in this months addition is pretty good, and timely considering the thread going on here right now. It is about the only good article in their this month though.

I like Sound On Sound, mostly for the focus on software. Takes me a month to get through an issue.

RESOLUTION - It surprises me how few people even know this exists. It's essentially based on the now defunct Studio Sound.

Resolution is a good magazine, but not widely available in the US.... I have been enjoying EQ magazine recently. Not for the reviews, but for artist/ engineer interviews. It seems like they are looking more at the process of recording than many of the other magazines. Or maybe it's cause my picture was in last month's issue....

I may on occasion talk about some of the products I am a dealer for in my posts.. and that's OK! I sell them because I like them. Not vice versa. It's more fun to talk about things you know and love, then things you don't.

TapeOp is awesome, as everyone knows. Mix is good sometimes, ok other times. EQ has really been a disappointment the last couple of years. I used to love reading EQ but it now seems to be more like Electronic Musician II.

I don't really feel any magazine is "essential."

Mix is important if you want to be on top of the trends mix feels is important (or that pay to be in mix). Most of the more commercial magazines seem to have the same articles, columns, ads, features, shoot-outs, etc as any other magazine. After reading a few of them for years, you start to notice they just recycle old articles and concepts. Mix does have a bunch of excellent material in the archives, but most of it is already out in book form

Tape op actually has some original content/opinion in it, and i think pro sound news seems to be what it is.

While it doesn't cover engineering, Bassics magazine is great. If anybody knows of a recording magazine with a similar philosophy, i would tout it all over It comes with a cd with tracks pertaining to the articles too. Not everybody has internet access, you know.
