I've got a deal goin on..I may buy one of these beauties! Are they worth their price in terms of sound quality and endurance?

Hell yeah!!! I have one! They aren't easy to work but they sure sound insane!

I can't wait to start recording with it again. How much are they going for these days. Last I hears was $3000 to $4000

I wouldn't take it out live unless you got people to lug/repair. I just use mine in the studio.

I own one and absolutely love it.
Whether it's worth $4000+ is too subjective to say.

It's a customized rig consisting of an eight voice and a minimoog built into one cabinet. There's also a rare early digital Oberheim sequencer visible to the left of the rig.

I used to own an 8 voice (the 4 voice with the extra 4 above).

The thing was insane, the fattest sound ever...

I used to call it the coffin because it was so big and heavy..

I sold eventually as i didn't use it enough then, should have used more i guess

I used to get to use a Oberheim 4 voice all the time because Pat Coil was recording his music and doing session work, so he left his gear set up.
WhoHooo!

I have it all over stuff I did between '79 and '81.

I had a Matrix 6 and thean a Matrix 6R (rackmount version) and they weren't bad.

I finished restoring my 4-Voice a few months ago. It was a lot of work, but now it's working like a dream and it was definitely worth every hour spent!

So I imagine the 4 and 8 voice are better than the OB-X because you can have slightly different voice setting for each voice?

how would you contrast the sound of the 4-voice to that of the Xpander? (I own one, and love it)

best regards
Massimo

I used to own both, now I just own one SEM. as cool as the xpander sounds, nothing compares to the raw sound of the 4 voice. the xpander can do a lot more, of course, but sounds small compared to the SEMs. still, a great sound, as you know. . .

Regarding the 4 Voice and OBX and Xpander.
They are completely different sounding beasts, even without discussing the individual analogue synth voice nature of the 4 Voice.

That depends how much keyboard playing you do versus recording.
I suspect the 4 Voice is going to be harder to find in the future.

Yes, that's true. These machines will probably increase in value pretty rapidly. I must buy it...it's faith!

Note also that Mr. Oberheim has been making the SEM modules again lately.

Presumably (?) the new SEMs could be used with the old programmer, keyboard etc. of the 4 voice? If so, it's not as risky a buy as other big old analogs. You could probably find a way to contact Oberheim about this.

Google around this board and the net, I think only one store sells them for him.

That's his eight voice, Geddy never had a four voice. He said his SEM polyphonic was a "white elephant" on tours - they're a b!tch to tune up before and during a show. He only used it on a couple of tours/albums, his OB-X and OB-Xa were mucher easier to tour with.

Dennis DeYoung of Styx toured with an eight voice and he had the same problems.

Not many artists toured with eight voice SEMs.
