Here's the story reported by the Cleveland Plain Dealer...... Cleveland R&B singer Sean Levert dies by Donna J. Miller/Plain Dealer Reporter Monday March 31, 2008, 8:23 AM KAI PEDIZISAI R&B singer Sean Levert, younger brother of the late Gerald Levert and a co-founder of the group LeVert, died Sunday night at Lutheran Hospital. The 39-year-old was taken to Lutheran from the Cuyahoga County Jail and died there at 11:57 p.m. Sunday, a Cuyahoga County Coroner's spokesman said. Sean Levert was at the jail because he was found guilty March 24 of not paying child support. Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Nancy Margaret Russo sentenced Levert to 22 months in prison and three years of probation for failing to pay nearly $90,000 to three children. He was also declared indigent. The coroner's office will perform an autopsy today. The results of blood test won't be available for several weeks. Cuyahoga County Jail Warden Kevin McDonough said Levert suddenly became ill Sunday night. He had been at the jail for a week. Early last week, Levert had "some psych issues, but was normal lately," McDonough said. He was not considered suicidal. Levert would have been transferred to the Lorain Correctional Institution in a day or two to serve the 22-month sentence. He pleaded guilty to owing $69,525 to two children. He was ordered to pay $612 a month for them. He owed $19,499 to a third child, who is now an adult, and was ordered to pay $561 month on that case. Levert's attorney told the judge that Levert had $20,000 he wanted to pay so that he would be eligible for early release. Russo said in a telephone interview this morning that Levert recently admitted to having a $50-a-day marijuana addiction. She said Levert told her the habit began when he was 14. He also had high blood pressure and wasn't taking medication for it, she said. Levert told Russo that the only medication he took was an occasional Xanax, which treats insomnia and anxiety. He tested positive for marijuana while out on bond on the child support charges. Levert was convicted of drug abuse in July 1995. He successfully completed treatment and was released from probation in August 1997. Court records show he has been convicted a half-dozen times of driving with a suspended license. He was also convicted of being impaired while driving in 1993 and of having an open beer can in his car in 1995. Russo declared Levert indigent so that his money would go toward child support instead of fines and court costs, she said. The Cuyahoga County Coroner's Office said Levert's body showed no signs of trauma or foul play. The R&B trio LeVert - featuring Gerald and Sean Levert and their friend Marc Gordon, broke out of Cleveland with a string of hits, including the 1987 Top 5 smash "Casanova." Gerald launched a solo career in 1991, although he continued to perform often with Sean and sporadically with Gordon. A new LeVert album was in the works when Gerald died Nov. 10, 2006, of an accidental overdose of prescription and over-the-counter medications at his home in Newbury Township. Sean Levert and Gordon reformed the group in 2007 with Dwight Thompson, formerly of the Rude Boys, rounding out the new lineup. The trio performed together in November 2007 as part of the Thanksgiving Holiday Jam at Cleveland State University's Wolstein Center. They also performed together at gigs in Miami, New Orleans and Atlanta. So far, so good. "The audiences have been great," Sean said in an interview last year. "People like the LeVert sound. . . . I think we can keep it going and try to get some new material out soon."

t|Those three children will never get their money. Never would have anyways... $90K in back child support... NINETY THOUSAND DOLLARS that was NOT spent on his children. That speaks volumes. Be careful what you ask for because you just might get it. |

Bummer... I knew one of the lawyers that represented Gerald. Shame that they're both no longer with us.

I was lucky enough to work with both Gerald and Sean before they died, as well as Eddie on the Something To Talk About album last year. They were always smiling and laughing. Its a shame. Feel bad for Eddie and for Marc Gordon and everyone else close to them.

Yeah, I have been trying to get in touch with Tony for a while now, but more so now and I haven't been able to. I can't imagine how they're feeling.
