Thread Starter | Is it just me or is anyone else missing the bold/plain post status between visits? Is it just me or is anyone else missing the bold/plain post status between visits? This used to be automatic - now I have to click "Mark Forum Read" each time I visit to see which posts have been added to and reset the display. Am I missing a simple Prefs setting somewhere that works like it used to? I've read the sticky Jules posted but I can't seem to fathom the new change! ![]()

| Gearslutz.com admin | Its a double edge sword.. What the new setting does is make the New Posts feature (the white lettering at the the top of the forum) actually display ALL the updated threads since your last visit. (it didn't before, it operated an incomplete 12 hour time frame only) If you didn't know it already the New Posts feature is a nice way to catch up on the forum. You do it like this.. click on New Posts - speed read the list of threads, and click on ones that interest you, then when you are done, click the Mark Forums Read link. So settings were tweaked to make this work properly. ![]()

| In the past hundreds of new posts go missing due to the fact that the system discards all new posts whether you have read them or not. Nothing should go missing between visits. If you didn't read a thread or new post those thread titles stay bold. Once you read the thread or new post it goes to plain type. If you're done with that forum you can mark that forum read. If you click "Mark Forum Read" on your return visit you will never be able to see your new threads. The idea is to read the threads you want to read and click on the "Mark Forum Read" button only when you want to reset. The threads or posts you didn't read will not reset on their own. It's really simple... If you read GS via the "New Posts" search click on the "Mark Forums Read" button once you have read everything you want to read. Next time you return the latest posts will be there waiting for you and nothing will ever be lost. If you read GS via individual forums click on that particular forum's "Marked Read" button once you have read everything wanted to read. Quote:

| I now "mark all threads read" after each visit to the forum. This makes sure that on my next visit all new ones are in bold. Doing it this way resets all the new posts I have not read because I am not interested in that subject or topic and I can concentrate on the ones I am onterested in. But The one thing I would like to see added is that clicking the title of a thread automatically takes you to the page where the first unread post is and not having to try several pages in a multi-page thread to find it.

If can set your parameters in your User Control Panel that automatically takes you to the newest unread post. Go to the Edit options then... Pick an option that's best for you: When viewing a thread, you will be able to view the thread from a choice of four modes. Linear Mode (Oldest First) - In this mode, posts are displayed chronologically from oldest to newest. Posts are shown in a flat mode so that many posts can be viewed simultaneously. Linear Mode (Newest First) - This is the same as the above mode, except that posts are ordered in an opposite way (newest first). Threaded Mode - In this mode, a tree is shown along with every post. This tree allows you to see the relationship each post has to others, in terms of who responded to whom. Only one post is shown at a time. Hybrid Mode - This mode is a mixture of the linear and threaded modes. The post tree is displayed like in the threaded mode, but multiple posts are displayed simultaneously like in the linear modes. If you want a quicker easier solution, just click on the little blue arrow next to the last poster's name. By clicking this link you will be directed to the last post of that thread. Next time you're on a search list or at the main page of a forum, click on that little blue arrow and you are directly sent to the last post. I hope this helps. Quote:
Ethan, Thanks for bringing this up. I totally empathize with you on this one... So many posts went missing with the old system. I too like to have control of what I want to read or not read.

| I don't like it. I liked the old way better, really. I usually don't go to every forum each time I visit, and so I never used the "new posts" tab anyway. Now I just have to remember to "mark forums read" every single time before I leave, or I will be lost when I return next. ![]()

Hundreds of posts from every forum even the ones you like go missing with the old system. I don't understand the logic of being okay with the loss of hundreds of threads for the benefit of some additional comfort. It's just not fair the GS community at large! We have to look at the big picture on this one.

But GS is approaching 38,000 members, and I'm finding nowadays that even if I come back a couple hours later, there are usually more new posts than I have time to read- I gotta work, ya know. sigh.. just not enough hours in the day anymore.

| Like the crossties in a railroad... or the stars in the sky. What I really need is some expanded "you have posted in this thread" notification, something like either "someone quoted one of your posts and had something interesting to add" or "they didn't quote you, but they referred to something you said or an argument you put forth and either dissed it or agreed with it," but in any case I usually check out a thread with the little arrow... quite often I've forgotten what I said, and then coming across it again, I'm like hey! dude, you are just a wit!

How do you think us moderators feel about it? I averaged it out the other day. depending on the time of day it can be between 75 to 175 posts per hour. With that said, even though there's a lot more traffic, I really like the fact that I'm in control of what I want to see or not see. All the slow moving forums got bagged with the old system.

All the slow moving forums got bagged with the old system. I see a lot more movement is the slower moving forums. I cannot be sure, but I believe it's because of the new updated system search feature. Folks (now) get to see it all and respond accordingly. ...It's a beautiful thing.
