Waves C4 vs. Waves LinMB

These two plugins seems like pretty much the same exept for LimMB being phase linear...

Does a phase linear multiband compressor sound more dull compared to a non-linear one? Why diden't they just upgrade the C4 to being phase linear...I don't get it..? Why do they offer two multiband compressors?

C4 has cross-over distortion which is annoying.....LinMB has 5 bands, which is annoying.

I beleive they didn't 'upgrade the C4 to be phase linear' to keep it as is and develop another plug.

The same with the L1/L2 & EQ's they offer.

If they just upgraded, you wouldn't be able to open old sessions.
They'd sound different.

C4 was designed more as a track insert while LinMB is "meant" for mastering.

The LinMB came about because a lot of people (myself included) complained that the C4 degraded the sound (even when the plug wasn't doing anything). This was due to the interaction of the different bands filters. The LinMB will null whereas the C4 won't. I wish they'd also made a 2,3 and 4 band version.....

thanks Jazzius.

what do you mean about crossover distortion?

i know eq bands exhibit phase discrepancies between bands, but i'm not sure how you are using the word "distortion".

to me distortion is clipping, like on a guitar amp. or it can also mean to me any non-linearity, because it is "distorting" the original sonic picture in some way.

are you talking about some sort of low-level clipping that goes on between the bands?

also, one more question if you don't mind: why does it matter that the Linear MB is 5-band? can't you just leave one band unused and cover the frequency spectrum with the other 4 bands?

I'm using the term (distortion) in the sense that the input is different from the output, even when the C4 is doing nothing. To me, putting the C4 inline makes the signal sound a bit distorted, though not like stomping on a fuzz pedal or something.

5 bands:......you can't move the outer bands completely out of the way.....

hi....i think that's one of it's best features actually....each band has it's
place...not being able to move them anywhere you want to is excellent!
As you have stated from above:

"I'm using the term (distortion) in the sense that the input is different from the output, even when the C4 is doing nothing."

I regard the above as a very, very subtle setup....sure, it's not true by-pass BUT....what we have here is an oh! so great setting that I probably wouldn't have gone for myself because it's too tame....and in all reality...that's the beauty of it....it's just barely noticeable.

I'm doing a job using the C4 and the LinMB. I think the C4 is perfect for the final mix because it has the ability to put the lid on the bottom end while the other 3 bands can remain dynamic. I do a lot of Vinyl records to Cd transfers for people and the results that can be had from these Plug-Ins is nothing short of staggering.
