DRUMS DRUMS DRUMS

Fellas:

I am needing to integrate more live drums into my sound and could use some recommendations from you experienced slutz. I use Logic with BFD1.5.I need a wide range of sounds from Coldplay-like drums to old Motown soul, to 70's disco.

1) What is a good inexpensive (($600 range) drumkit-like controller?
2) What inexpensive ($300 range) third party libraries can provide the types of sounds I need?
3) Any general recommendations or tricks i should know about ?
4) Is the upgrade to BFD2 worth it?

Thanks!

J

Wish I could help...I only do live drums. No samples, triggers, etc for this kid.

I'll give it a shot...

I don't know that there is one...I can't say that I've tried them all, but I think that the best of the current "breed" is the Roland lineup. The least expensive one I'd consider would probably be their $1000-ish kit, although I've tried that new ultra-compact one and was pretty impressed. Doesn't have a whole lot of sounds but if you'd be using other sounds that may not be an issue. I still prefer it to the Yamaha and especially the Alesis offerings...

I can't say for sure what you'd need, but I've messed around with the Toontrak (EZ Drummer) libraries a bit and they offer a pretty good variety of impressive sounds, especially considering their prices. But I've been pretty impressed with most of the software-based drum stuff to come out over the past few years as well...who knows, maybe I'm just easily impressed because of how much better it sounds than the hardware-based stuff I've heard over the past twenty-odd years.

Sure, get a good drummer to play the parts.

4) Is the upgrade to BFD2 worth it?
That one I can't answer for you.

Still haven't found out what Nir Z is playing in this demo (I can't imagine it is a cheap electronic kit!) but EZ drummer S2.0 looks like an amazing package

Nir is playing a Hart kit with a Roland TD20 head.. not cheap.

Yes, the BFD2 upgrade is worth the money - you get the new interface and 50 gigs of new drums.
