Somebody has not forgotten them! Mid-90's flavor of the week, never to be heard on the radio again. That shit kicks ass!

I would seriously crap my pants if Andy Wallace guest moderated here. I would definitely fork over $100.00 to get him here. Jules- if you can make this happen in anyway do it man! Just imagine asking Andy about Buckley and those Grace sessions; along with the other 1000 cool albums he's worked on.

I met Any Wallace's manager at Epic records A&R dept NYC last summer. I can email the A&R cat that introduced us (I lost the managers card) to get his number back again...

Dont hold your breath though

I have surprises planned for you all.... as always...

what (other than riding the fader on the bass) did you do to that track?

the first one really has that modern rock sound - very polished.

good work, man!

If being a moderator is not possible how about getting Jules to do an interview with him and posting it on Gearslutz. Perhaps even having people in the forum give Jules questions a head of time to ask him. I would think he could be available for an interview. Just a thought.............................

I thought his manager is Skip Saylor of Saylor Recording Studio?

I spoke to Mr. Saylor before and he claimed to manage A. Wallace.

I might be wrong

On one hand, I can certainly sympathize with the approach of "Hey, I can't hear any difference, so why should I pay that much?". On the other, I wonder why anyone who can't hear a difference is recording, mixing, or producing records.

I think this is a great idea and much more possible. I'd love to know how he mixes that damn bass!! And what kind of effects besides his use of delays he uses... etc....

For jeffgamemaster I eq'd the bass differently, added a touch more 180Hz and more 40Hz, it was still automated and riding the same. The bass in my room at he moment is a little iffy because I took down all my Auralex bass traps (as if they are bass traps) because I get 6 Mini Traps today (yeeey). I never touched the snare reverb on either mix. Don't think I touched the toms... not too happy with the tom sound, the drummer didn't hit them hard and in the final mix I'll probably find some hard hits with each one and sample all the rest.

Andy Wallace has mixed some of my favorite albums of all time. Jeff Buckley's "Grace" and Pete Yorn's "Music for the Morning After" are amazing examples of his work. I'd love to hear some insight from the man himself.

For the record, AW is great, but actually Pete Yorn's "music for the morning after" is mixed by Brad Wood, Jim Scott, TLA, Ken Andrews and Don Fleming.

Oooh, another Pete Yorn fan...cool! I think you're right. I'm getting some of my facts mixed up. But I know for sure that I read quote from R. Walt Vincent somewhere where he said something like, "...we kept things simple and recorded in a garage and saved all the money for the mix, which Andy Wallace did a great job on..." something like that. Anyway, maybe we can ask him to clarify. I started a thread a while back on Homerecording.com about R. Walt Vincent and low and behold R. Walt showed up and gave some sweet details about MFTMA. You can check it out here: http://homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=119249

So do I.

I´m just a bit confused about the GRACE credits:

They say: ...engineered... by Andy Wallace - `THE FIST `

Who knows more about `THE FIST` ?

Oho...Made ya look! Sorry, couldn't resist.

In Southern California, doctors use
photos like that to do the Rorshack Test.
"What does this look like to you?"
"I See a bicycle".
"Hmmm..." (bites on end of pencil)

If you like Grace you might wanna' check out the expanded Live at Sine disc w/bonus DVD. It's amazing. The extra songs are well worth it.

I was there on NYC's Lower East Side when it all happened and I remember my buddy Handsome Dick raving about this kid. A tremedous loss....

Watching someone do something and doing it are 2 different things.

Especially since its common practice to switch streams when something isn't working so hot in a mix.

Yeah he may start out with something but just as quick take it off.

I think a better suggestion than gathering what he uses is to try to figure it out for yourself.

I think if you want to have the same kinda bottomn end that AW gets in his mixes, a better suggestion is to kinda take the same route as he did.

Start mixing rap, hiphop and dance. If any kinda music needs a huge bottomn end in the mix(and especially for the clubs), but needs to be clear and full(not distorted) its rap.

One thing though is that alot of the arrangements aren't complicated, so you have to find a way to makes things interesting.

I think one of AW's strengths is that he makes simple arrangements(rock and roll) sound present and complex.

But it still has the raw energy and power.

AW's background came from mixing 80's rap and dance. If you listen to a lot of the early rap and dance records from the 80's there is an amazing amount of energy and clarity, but they still had to sound full.

He basically took these concepts and translated it to his modern rock mixes.

I think the fact that he has done lots of styles of music and the fact that he is a great producer helps him in getting his vision across.

I think the worst thing a mixer can do is type cast himself.

If you do the same music all the time its gets old and after awhile the industry will move on to the next hotshot.

Its a good thing to be exposed to other kinds of music and adopt different techniques that will help you grow.

It helps develop the ear (technical) and heart (inspiration).

These are the two main tools i feel you need in order to be a successful mixer.

Just an opinion by the way.
