BA 1272 DI vs. Standard DI Box

BA 1272 DI vs. Standard DI Box

I usually plug Bass right into the BA1272 and it sounds great.

Unfortunately it doesn't have the extra Line Out that most DI boxes have.

I tried some cheaper DI boxes and they are nowhere near as good as the BA 1272 Line Input.

I tried a Radial with the Jensen transformer and it sounded pretty much the same.

What's in the BA1272 Line Input? A separate transformer or does it use one as part of the Preamp already?

thx

From a designer point of view,
It is a waste not to share the same input\output transformer since
in most if not all pres its impossible to use the DI and Mic pre simultaenously.

An input tranny does have a significant effect on the sound, both for mics and for instruments,
As you have expirienced yourself (using a unit with a tranny from one of the best manufactures out there) for the better.
Im not sure what Tranny Brent uses for his mic pres.

Hi

To the best of my knowledge... I may be wrong or it may have changed... the DI is connected to a high value resistor (100K ?) that is connected to the secondary winding of the input transformer... which is the input to the BA283 amplifier.

As such the signal doesn't go through the transformer, per ce, it just uses the secondary impedance as the bottom limb of a (big) attenuator.

I believe this kind of technique is used with other "Neve rack mounters" because the 1272 was never designed to be a DI buffer amplifier.

You do have a second, unbalanced output available on pin P with the shield connected to pin E. You could connect a LO2567 transformer to it if you wanted a second, transformer balanced, output.
