a pro tools question ...

ok heres the trouble , how would you export session data for pro tools , on a PC , at the moment , I make new sessions and make new tracks and direct them over and over like 5-6 times in a session , since I'm tracking instrument based , how would I make this easier for myself lol and save time !! ?

Are you asking how to make a template for Pro Tools? If so, Pro Tools is clumsy at templates.

The way I do it (which may not be the best way) is to create a session with all your tracks the way you like them. Name it "template" or whatever. Close and save the session in a convenient location. Create a new session and import "session data" to the new session. That way all your audio paths will still be organized.

If I'm doing basic tracks one after another, I'll keep it in one session (doing frequent "saves" along the way). We're usually stopping between songs, so when I hit "record" again it's creating new audio files. There may be several songs in that one session. After the heat of the session I can trim the regions down to a particular song and "save copy in" including audio files to a new location. Close the trimmed session and reopen the original tracking session. Rinse and repeat. Just don't accidently save the trimmed session over your tracking session, although it wouldn't be the end of the world.

Again, there may be better ways of doing it and I'd be interested in learning new tricks as well.

As mentioned above... Import Session Data works well and is mostly what I do...

Another way is:

If I am going to be tracking drums all day using the same mics ill create a new session name it "Drum Template" and right before I hit record ill do a "Save As" and name it the song I am going to do first.... Then when that song is done, ill load up "drum template", Save As the new song name, and start rolling...

You need to make sure to "Save Copy In" though! Save Copy In is ALWAYS a good idea when backing up...

In fact you might as well "Save Copy In" instead of "Save As"...hmmmmmmm interesting.

Many ways to skin this cat!

Heres another way that seems like it would be even easier:

Can't you do this just by making a template session and then click Stationary Pad in the Get Info pane? Obv this is mac only.

Here's a very fast, absurdly simple way.

So you have it all set exactly the way everyone wants it. You record the first song of the session. You all agree its time to move on to the next song. SAVE.

Then, select all, and CUT all audio files.

Save with new name for next song. Record next song.

Do this for all new songs.

Yes, this does put all the audio in one audio folder. If later you want all separate, do a "Save copy as" with audio files and make a separate folder for each song. Make it to a separate drive and you now have your original session backed up as well.

Its fast and it assures that the next song starts exactly where you left off.

Yeah, I just checked this out...MAC ONLY

Make a session and set it up exactly how you want it.
Save it and call it template or whatever.
In the Finder, Get Info and click Stationary Pad and Locked
Then whenever you click on that session icon it will ask you if you want to change the template or open a new session with all those settings.

Easy

This can be dangerous! It should be mentioned that if one uses this method to NEVER delete audio from the session; only remove it. Otherwise you will lose audio in your other sessions as well.

It's safer to copy a template folder (so that each song is in a separate folder with separate audio/fade/backup files subfolders), or to make a new session in a new folder and import session data from the previous song.
