Unhappy possibly an impossible possibility?

OK, here goes...
I own a fabulous MXL 2001-P microphone. I know that there are a few mods that can be made to this to enhance its aural performace. To my ear the mic sounds crispy, and kind of midrangey. Does anyone know any mods that may smooth this puupy out? I mean like a really warm, mellow, almost dark sound. I'm thinking that because this mic uses a transformer, I may be able to swap out the transformer for something with a different flavor. Anyone?

You could try that. Maybe swap out some of the caps for ones with a larger value to roll off more top end. Honestly though, most of the nastiness in those mics comes from the cheap capsules.

You Should talk to Jim Williams about it. I heard one of those that he modded, and it sounded good, though not dark and bloomy. It basically will sound like a good version of what the mic already sounds like. I had my MCA mic modded by Jim (39 bucks!) , and it was a similar thing; kept basically the same character but it just sounded better. Definitely worth it though, as he only charges $125 and knows what parts will sound the best.

I know there was a tube mod printed in tapeOP about a year and a hlf ago. I have a friend that loves it.

Sorry i don't the date/issue but with a little snooping a bet you could find it.

I can't see the sense in spending $125 on a $100 mic. I'd rather put the $125 into a better mic like a 421 or something.

I want to turn one of my mics into a shaker. What could I use inside of it? BB's?

I think a dildo turned into a shaker would be a big seller. David
