Mark King is sick.

The fact that he could play that level 42 stuff while singing is astounding..

He has a solo album from early 80's which I heard - "Influences" - He plays drums and guitar extremely well on that. Very interesting album!

This track is on the live album "A physical prescence" from years ago - much better version!

A version from that era > YouTube - Level 42 Mr. Pink Rockpalast 1984

He makes it look so easy... I first turned on to them when they released "World Machine" with the single "Something about You" in the mid 80's. The rest of the album was an eye-opener. It definitely opened a new type of skill to my ears. All the guys were/are amazingly talented. That is one thing I miss about the 80's, the overall level of competence of the major artists in pop/rock was sooo much better than the last two decades. It was cool to play well.

Yeah man, when I found out it was him on drums I nearly shit a brick!

I think it's the title track on that that goes through about 20 different sections, mad.

My fave is 'There Is a Dog' though - lovely tune that one!

Been a Mark King fan many many years. Though I'm not much into slapping these days it's still amazing. I saw them at the London Victory club in Tampa (disco w/ a stage) supporting World Machine. I was standing 10 ft from him. What blew me away was the fact that he had doubled up on the bass parts and was improvising on the melody while he was singing. It was flawless. Can't remember the name of the record but the one before World Machine that Verdine White and Larry Dunn from EWF produced is smokin'.

I forgot to mention that he was always a drummer but converted to bass because he felt Boone was a better drummer.

Mark King

...as my primary instrument is the drums, I always seem to gravitate towards more "percussive" players that help thicken the groove and focus on rhythms. I am not a fan of overly busy players who are "noodly" for lack of a better term. King is brilliant because he texturizes...like one out of every 5 thumps is actually a true note...the rest seems to help build this solid granite groove with the drummer that is ALL WORLD. He is a tremendous talent...and it is even more amazing to think that he is singing while playing those sick grooves. You are a bad, bad Man, Mr. King...

BTW, I have a Level 42 live DVD with Gary Husband on drums...boys and girls...that is one great live band.

I consider myself a bassist...I would pick a few bass players that really stand out and Mark King is one of them. Over the years I've ignored "Slap and Pop" because most bassists have murdered it and made it hokey and over use it...its like adding a little spice to your playing, don't over use it. Spend some time on a Bass forum and you will grow sick of hearing about Wooten, Flea and Jaco...
