Male Vocal Chain ala Roy Orbison/ Chris Issak

Hello-

I am about to take on a project recording male vocals. The singer sounds like Roy Orbison, Chris Issak. I am looking for a beautiful sounding vocal chain. Very warm and huge. I own this equipment:

U67
C12
Demeter Tube Pre Amp
Great River 1NV
API 512c
API 550b
Distressor
Summit Audio DCL-200

Can someone please recommend a good setup using what I own.

Thank you

I would love to hear how the '67 sounds through the API's and then the distressor on that kind of vocal...

I may on occasion talk about some of the products I am a dealer for in my posts.. and that's OK! I sell them because I like them. Not vice versa. It's more fun to talk about things you know and love, then things you don't.

Bet something like a Pendulum pre or the Quartet would be the schnizzit for that sound.

Not sure about Mic.What did Roy use? U47?

That's a lot of expensive equipment for not knowing how to use it.

Tell the singer you want to take a half hour to audition microphones and mic pres that best suit him.

I have never had an objection to this. Everyone wins.

I suspect the key to the Roy Orbison vocal sound was Roy Orbison and you could have gotten the Roy Orbison vocal sound with a Radio Shack mic if Roy Orbison was singing. That being said, my money's on the 67.

Half and hour?

Wow.

I would say 10 minutes.

If you don't feel it right away than switch it. Don't give yourself a chance to second guess.

And i would do it when they are warming up.

Most singers are nervous wrecks and giving them or the producer something to doubt about could be a recipe for disaster. Also having to sing for half and hour just to try out a mic may wear them out.

Just an opinion.

I agree with Thrillfactor. I'm a believer in being ready to record by the end of the first runthrough. It's more important to catch the best vocal performance than anything else. Some singers give their all in the first take! I'm in record every time the 'tape' is rolling.
On the subject of Roy Orbison, I'm not an expert on ribbon mics but I always that was the sound. Same crooner type sound as Bing Crosby.

U67 > API with very little compression.
