Phase checking device for mixers

Hi folks,

I'm wondering if any of you know of a phase checking device that I saw an engineer (Steve Tillisch) in Nashville using in the late 80s. Basically he placed the hand held device in front of the speaker and played audio from each channel on the console. Depending on the reading he got, he would throw the phase switch on the console. He was of the opinion that because of the various manufacturers attitudes to pin wiring (ie pin 2 or 3 hot) that this caused "issues" at the mixing stage. The bottom line seemed to be when all channels were "phase alligned" the mix would be punchier.

Forgive me if this is not quite correct as it was fifteen years ago but it may jog someone's memory.

there was / is a polarity checker - hand held device. it sent a click through the system and showed if you started with compression or rarefaction i.e. the cone went out or in. sorry, i just woke up and can't express myself well.

i can't imagine a device reading single channel phase , doesn't phase shift have to be in relation to something else? another channel, a bunch of other sources?

dunno.....need more java

We use a "cricket" at our joint to click the polarity of every microphone... we use the Palmer "PAT-7" for testing the wiring of the joint [or for anywhere else I travel] as the readout seems a tad more stable.

BSS made the best hand held polarity tester...Dorrough makes cool meters...the two channel versions can be swirched to read phase
