Trying to drop bar/beat markers. After the first marker, Pro Tools gives me a message that I can't drop another marker because it's too close to a previous marker to represent a valid session tempo. Dunno. Would rather not use beat detective, but the situation demands I learn how, so now's is as a good a time as any. Help!!!

What exactly are you using Beat Detective for? Was the session done with a click?

Yeah, I've already subscribed to Kenny's beat detective tutorials. The drummer couldn't cut it to a click, which is why I'm going thru with beat detective and doing all this quantizing b.s. Overall, his meter was fairly tight, but he had a tendancy to rush the beat in places. It's good drumming, just not quite...well, beat detective tight. Which is what the band is after, unfortunately. Anyone have any idea why I keep getting this bleeding message from Pro Tools?
Thanks again,

Those tutorials won't help with that message you are getting. In fact, i would like to know myself because I have seen it before and could never figure it out.

If the band wants "Beat Detective Tight" they should have cut the track to a click in the first place. If the drummer can't cut it they really have no right to expect to sound that tight. But seeing how I've been in your shoes countless times I can definitely sympathize with ya.
I'm not sure how to circumvent the stubbornness you're getting from PT, but there's always the option of using Beat Detective to separate the drum performance (I'd probably just cut it at each kick, snare, and tom hit) and manually place each hit on the grid. This will take longer but it'll save you the frustration of fighting Beat Detective's sometimes-idiosyncratic behavior. Once the cut regions are on the grid you can use the "Edit Smoothing" to create crossfades, which you will probably have to clean up a bit yourself.
Hope this helps,
Cory Spotts

what do you have the divisions of each beat set to? 1/4, 1/8, etc? I don't know for sure if that's the problem but try upping that value if you haven't already.

It's actually one of the first things Kenny explains in his tutorial...if you have metronome selected instead of Conductor mode on the transport, you'll get that evil little message that I've been getting. The simplest things, wouldn't you know...
As far as the band wanting it Beat Detective tight having not cut the track to a click...well, I suppose I'm just looking at the situation as a challenge that I have the opportunity to learn from. If I can do it here, I should be able to do it anywhere. Let's just hope I won't be asked to do it again. Ever. I f(#%*ng hate this sort of music, but we all gotta eat, I suppose.
