Now, which unit(s) is this referring to? The Jensen, Cinemag, or both?

A shame. You have bourbon down there. Maybe not Kentucky bourbon. You have mint? I know you have sugar. We may have to fix you up with the rest.

Two or three of those and you'll be seeing colors. Maybe hearing colors too.

(All together, class. Can you say "RABBIT TRAIL?" I knew you could.)

Here is a letter i sent to wade after i got my 500 Germ. Not sure if its 100% relevant to this thread, but here goes.

Wade,

You shipped me a 500 series Germanium (thru Alto Music) last week and I really was not prepared for what I heard.

Shame on you !!!!!

You need to put a warning sticker on the box! Something like "This Unit will make you change your religion!"

What do you put in this thing? Elephant Testicals?

I've never heard a pre as HUGE as this. I was commenting the other day to a buddy of mine about the Old School Audio 500 pre that's called the "Big Daddy", that's quite large sounding. But it sounded tiny up against the 500 Germanium.

My 1st thought was, I gotta have more of these... no s**t! That IS the 1st thought that came to mind.

I tracked a female vocalist on it Friday thru my Wunder Audio mic, and the all I could keep saying to my self was "This thing sounds more tuby than all of my tube equipment.

Its easily going to be my go to pre on just about everything.

I was bummed that the 500 Germ wasn't happening, I wanted to hear it against the others too. I did some tracks with the rackmount Germ last year & my thought was, this thing ain't HiFi but it sure is fun.

Its not for clean recordings of chamber orchs.. thats for sure.
Its ALL about color and character. More so than any pre's ive ever come across.
Its gonna leave a sonic imprint for sure. One hell'uv'a'Sound though.

In my rack i got 3 original BA API's, 2 OSA classics, 1 OSA Mutant, 1 OSA Big Daddy and a 554 EQ. Got 2 spaces left and cant decide what to add. Got loads of other pre's for normal stuff (True Precision, Demeter, Vintech etc).

Not sure what direction to go. I have ZERO regrets on the Chandler. Its the James Earl Jones of mic pres for sure!

It's a shame James didn't get to put up the Burl B1 Mic Pre - Eddie Kramer has two of them, told us the were "the balls".

Next time there is a MP shoot out, please let me know so I can get a B1 in the mix.

PS to Dennis DCMIX - don't mess with The Jesus!

Hah hah,

I MEANT to say it was named AFTER the DRINK that was popularized by the Kentucky Derby... not the Derby itself, LOL! Peter has a thing for naming the units after alcoholic beverages, just wait till your see our Budweiser Spring Reverb, LOL!!!!

I must admit I've never had a Mint Julep either. I'll be at Potluck Con in June, maybe they make them in New Orleans? I'll need to try one just to say I DID! LOL

Lynn, RE the front panel design, I think we are one of the first to use a bone white panel and I think it sticks out fairly well against the bulk of black units. out there.

I'll say this, Scott's new proto looks SEXY... I'd even take her out on a date... just to see what she has on her 'plates' (sorry VERY bad geeky joke!)

Cheers

Matt

If there is a part 2 of the shootout, it would be nice to have 4 of each pre, and do kick, snare, and overheads.

I will bring the 512c's and MX-1's again.

lol...easily one of my favorite movies! I bought the DVD so I could watch it every 6 months or so. I'm laughing just thinking about some of the scenes!
I wish they would do a sequel to it...maybe with the dude winning a lottery or hooking up with the rich broad at the pool.

p.s. maybe hanging out with Henry (from Barfly) he, he

Sorry, not trying to hijack the thread with movie themes, just find some of the post funny.

Thanks to all the guys for doing the shootout; can't wait to hear the results!

N'awlins is Hurricane* town. (Not Katrina!) But I bet they could whip up a Julep for you. If they could just find some alcohol. (Big joke there.) They drink Hurricanes down there like they were water.

*Hurricane-it's a fruity beverage with 3 oz. of rum.

Actually it's more of tourist attraction. I lived there for nine years and never once witnessed anyone drinking one of those.

Good bourbon doesn't need a thing. Knob Creek or any bourbon with "Reserve" in its name is just fine as it is.

Exception: maybe Booker's needs some water. Uncut, it'll have you sounding like Moms Mabley the next morning.

No, you misunderstood me......or rather, I wasn't too clear in my inquiry.

I was merely asking which microphone input transformer came with the unit(s) tested. The Jensen, or the standard Cinemag? Or, were both used in the test?

Also, does anyone who was there, know if the MA5 was used with AND without the 28k feature engaged?

I am noticing a common problem with this thread - the correct spelling for Elixer is actually Elixir
