Am I the only one that's fed up with super over-airy vocal sounds? I have just heard a song on the radio with so much sizzle in the vocals that it hurt me ears. Take the "new" Cardigans album....."Fssssszzzzzzz" ouch!!!! Sometimes it almost sounds as if the singer has got an extra hole in their throat.

Sssssszzzzfffff.....Lasso.

Just seems one of those trends that has become over emphasized and over used. Of course that's how everyone wants to sound and maybe what a lot of people want to hear. I can only guess at it's origin. Let's see, maybe because of cute pop singers who can singsong a tune but lack real lungs or control between blowing hard and whispering. Gotta make it work though. AE uses top notch mics, pres, and then compresses to all hell so you can hear their nose hairs whistling between takes. Mixed up front, with a hair of delay and/or reverb for space. Make a hot video, show some navel and 6 million sold. Next.

Add this to the CD loudness compression wars and movie SFX where a pencil or magazine dropped on a desk has the impact of dropping a dumpster from a 5 story building.

It all makes me think that the ideally created listening perspective is that of a fly. Everything is HUGE!

Just another thought. There does seem to be singers who really can sing flat footed such as Christina A or Maria Carey. They even get the treatment. Such is fashion.

They generally can't belt so what you have is a soft sung female singer and tons of compression which really brings all of the breathy "air" right up front. I'm with you, it drives me up a wall! What happened to belters in pop music? Makes me really appreciate the Heart albums.
