The Wrecking Crew

Hello all,

Damon Tedesco, the son of the late, great session guitarist Tommy Tedesco has informed me of a a new documentary film his brother Denny made that's been ten years in the making about "The Wrecking Crew", a group of monstrously talented session musicians who played on hits by, among others: The Beach Boys, Frank Sinatra, Nancy Sinatra, Sonny and Cher, Jan & Dean, The Monkees, Gary Lewis and the Playboys, Mamas and Papas, Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass, Ricky Nelson, Johnny Rivers and were the bricks in Phil Spector’s "Wall of Sound".

I highly recommend that you cats and kittens check this film out.

Click on this for more info: The Wrecking Crew | Movie

It's about time.....

Thanks for this.

The most telented bunch of musicians in the history of Rock n Roll - make no mistake.

Don't forget Lee Hazelwood's 60's stuff and the fact that they saved a decent portion of "Forever Changes" by Love.

Liam.

HA!!!!

Fantastic. Looking forward to seeing that. I went to the site immediately and was greeted by seeing my old friend Don Randi sitting at the piano. Don was one of the first guys to give me a start in the biz. I owe a lot to him.

For those of you who don't know him by name, he's played on a gazillion records and owns the Baked Potato (Jazz club in LA).

Don Randi's Official Website

Man.....memories. The documentary looks to be a must see for anyone involved in pop/rock music.

THANKS!

Bill

Thanks, looking forward to it.

Looks similar to the The Funk Brothers documentary, Standing in the Shadows of Motown.

What a great doc that was. The story about James Jamerson and the pig's feet was hilarious. I'll have to check out this wrecking crew one.

Which probably includes 95% of those on this board. Many of whom have undoubtedly never heard of the WC. If you like rock music, expecially if it's from the US and in the 60's, you need to see this film.

I got an email back from Denny Tedesco. It's not showing yet, but he's going to let me know when it's in LA. My guess is that they are still looking for distribution.

Yeah, Damon said that it was to be premiered at SXSW. Let's just bring this back when it's at a "THEATER NEAR YOU" or available at your local TowerVirginBorderBuster's...

Looking forward to it!

Or not mic'd???? LOL (Check out some of those room shots)

When I was first getting started, I did many sessions with him back in the day (kind of after the WC's heyday) and I remember doing one session where he had a small TV on top of his trap cases right behind his music stands. The world series was on and he had the TV earphone on one ear glued to the game, and the other 1/2 headphone on the other ear listening to the session. He was playing drums (great BTW) and watching the series at the same time. Now THAT's multitasking!!!

holy crap do i ever want to see this. if anyone gets release info on the movie, please, please update thread and i'm going to subscribe to this thread as a matter of fact.

i love the props these cats (and kitties) are getting from the artists in the trailer. they were unsung no doubt. it's a lost era. there's no longer the same mystique in music that that level of humanity and congruency could, and would create, in our new era of "high tech" music. it kind of bums me out a bit if i pounder it enough :(..

thanks for the link and heads up!

I had an amazing conversation with Lee while we were mastering an album a couple years ago.

Putting two and two together with some things friends from both Atlantic Records and Gold Star had told me, it had become clear by the end of our conversation that Lee must have played an immense role in putting the wrecking crew together. At one point I told him "You really ought to write a book." He replied with a shrug and a "naaaa."

I'm really looking forward to this.

Bob, Gold Star was a funny little place. Just by lookiing at it you never would have guessed the history in those walls. I got to record there a couple of times before they tore it down. I have a feeling that those pics above were taken there, but it's been so long that I'm not sure anymore.

Thank You For Bringing This To Our Attention!

Huge fan of the wrecking crew here, you know, like when music was music!
Tommy Tedesco was one of my childhood heroes and I thank you for notifying us of this great project. I can't wait to see it. One of the
things I learned from reading Tommy Tedesco's old GP interview - the producers would ask Tommy if he could play Bouzouki or some other foreign
instrument and he would always say "sure!" then tune it to E,A,D,G etc. like a guitar, and know every key, chord, and scale on the instrument du jour. Genius!

Talking More Wrecking Crew Docu info!

Howdy! My name is Jon and I am one of the producers of The Wrecking Crew documentary. I am also a gear slut...7 guitars, 3 amps, PA system, and waayyyy too many efx pedals. But it sure is fun!

To all our LA friends, we have great news: the film will be shown at the LA Film Festival in June of this year. As of today, we have info on one screening, which will be at The California Plaza (outdoor venue, downtown Los Angeles) on Saturday, June 28, at 8pm. There will be an indoor screening as well, date and time TBD.

We learned last week that the film won The Audience Award at The Buffalo, NY, film festival. Their local newspaper also wrote a pair of glowing reviews of the film (4 out of 4 stars). You can see these reviews via links on the Wrecking Crew web site.

The Wrecking Crew web site will be updated on new info as soon as it becomes available. If you live in or near Nashville, TN., that is the film's next stop, closing the film fest on April 24. Here's the info from NFF's web site:

CLOSING NIGHT FILM, The Wrecking Crew, AND PARTY
Sponsored by The Recording Academy and Southwest Airlines
Film: THE WRECKING CREW – You heard them playing on the Beach Boys hits, on the Mamas and the Papas' recordings, on Frank Sinatra records, on Monkees' singles, they WERE Phil Spector's Wall of Sound. In fact, you heard them everywhere. This film looks (with great period footage) at the famed group of session musicians who backed nearly all the hits made in L.A. in the sixties. Featuring interviews with the Crew (including Glen Campbell, who was one of them before going “out in front”), as well as Nancy Sinatra, Herb Alpert, Brian Wilson, Mickey Dolenz and others…plus all that great music!
In Attendance: Director Denny Tedesco and members of the Wrecking Crew

The Closing Night is a celebration of the 2008 Festival and feature s live music by The Wrecking Crew with some very special guests!
9:00pm-Midnight/ Cannery Ballroom, 1 Cannery Row, 37203
Tickets are $45 for Closing Night Film and Party, $40 member; $11 film only, $35 party only.

Rock on! Jonny O
