Alternate Snare Mic

Hi GS,

I've been using the good ol' sm57 on the snare for the past few months. It's nice. It works, but I was wondering about alternatives that might be less sensitive or responsive as the sm57.

Like, for kick drum I use the Bk-5 with the blast filter and it sounds like zero gravity, like I can't really tell where it is in the room. It practically makes the kick sounds like an 808 kick sample in terms of sound and space. I love it, it creates a lot of ground for reverb etc.

Not that I really need my snare to sounds like a sample, but is there a mic for snare that might not make the sound of the room so present? I was wondering what alternatives there might be in this direction.

633a for a more middy sound

I'm not sure if it's less sensitive or not but I've recently (past few months) gone with the Audix I5. I've found it's easier to mix and place than the 57.
My 2c..........

Hey Sigma,

It was actually your recommendation that prompted me to get the blast filter for the kick.

You weren't kidding. That mic's got never-ending ass. It's floor doesn't exist, and when my friend put it on solo, it wasn't picking up anything but the kick.

Great mic. I'm glad I didn't sell my other one. I want to get another blast filter.

Well, I don't know if that's the proper term for it, but it's this snow cone looking thing that fits on the the bk-5 for shock so the ribbon doesn't break.

They used these mics in Hollywood back in the day. I imagine it was used for gun blasts and things of that nature.

Yeah, unbelievable. But then again, so is that kick drum sound. You weren't kidding. It's like freaking Star Wars.

The way I look at it, it's a $1500-1600 microphone, it's just that part of it is commonly missing.

I paid a bit too much for mine, but eez nice. eez berry nice

Less responsive and less room than a SM57? How about an SM7?

Or C-Ducer tape ...

I do like this idea,

What about a ribbon like the Crowley and Tripp "Naked Eye" Roswellite,

I KNOW it can take abuse on the snare,

Actually the transient response of the Roswellite equipped microphone is un-godly. You can actually EAT the peak transient coming through the speakers. Its in your face with fat and warm smack. It also works well with the 57 on the head and the NE on the shell. Very disco and very large.

SM58 is good for funky stuff. RE20 for that boomy ballad sound. U87 for modern 'rock' .
No such thing as a bad mic.

Sometimes the Audix D1 works better than the 57...especially if you want more rejection of bleed.
Also, it is never metioned but the Sennhieser e905 snare mic works well.
A few alternatives that won't break the bank

57, M201, i5 all work for me and are similar flavors.

When I need something bigger and drier a 441 is the choice. It almost seem to add 2" to the depth of the drum.

+1 for the I5. A little hotter...definitely more bottom end and balls. Love it...

I agree with the M201 fans. It's also got a pretty tight hypercardiod pattern so it won't pick up the room so much.

I´m hooked on the Shure Beta 57, way more open and crispy snare sound than the sm57.

I also just got the Audix i5 a few days ago... but I have yet to try it on snare.

To me,it is a little more tighter and has more low end. I would use it on a snare that has a lot of upper ring to it, if you wanted to tame it. (Not that thats all I would use it for, because it does sound really good).

It really depends on the drum though. I did a shoot out of some of my mics a year or two ago, and they all sounded like my snare,..just different aspects of the sound it made were more pronounced with different mics.

+3!

that's pretty much the same description i would say it has on snare, guitar amps, toms, etc. although it might be too fat on toms to fit in with a busy mix.

I´m using my 57s less on the snare, but one thing i like about it is that i don´t need gates or expanders , this mic is allready deaf...

every other dynamic i know captures more ambience (and bass drum) , hi hat..

If there´s really something (good sounding) that makes the snare sound more like a snare and captures less ambience or bleed please let me know.

What i use most of the time is audix i5 + 421 .. some times a sony pencil condenser or km184 .. and a very strange sm57 that actually has more highs and bass than the average 57, i don´t know why.

M201 is hyper cardoid and has a great top end. Dodge wiring on your hyped 57 I'd guess.
Most common reason people don't like 57 on snare is that they put it too close to the drum. 3+ inches.

Good sounding is subjective, but I wasn't kidding about C-ducer tape for a dryer sound ...
