If the SM-98 is that small gooseneck condenser I freakin' love that mic!! Sounds amazing on toms, but no-one has them and Shure don't make them anymore.

I phase align the 201 and the sm98 together... It sounds so killer. I snatch the sm98's on ebay... The beta 98 sounds nothing like the sm98. I do like the beta 98 for side or under snare though.

m201

Hi ! i'am new in this forum, looking for an alternitive to the sm 57.
What m201 do you mean, the Beyerdynamic M201 TG, or M201 N (C) ?
Is there a difference ?
Thanks !

e22s is the best mic I've ever tried on snare, the transient detail and minimal spill are winners for me, they take eq very well too. Shame they're so expensive, really awesome mics though!

I prefer the Audix i5 to the Beyer 201, more top end bite and tighter pattern.

I have no idea what an e22s sounds like. Are there any generous souls out there that wouldn't mind sharing a sound clip alongside a 57?

thanks,
Brad

I have been mostly using a Groove Tubes GT-44 on snare lately. I have a bunch of 57's, 421's, an i5 and a 441. The Goove Tubes just about always sounds best to me.

I was using a Beyer 201 on the snare top and then tried an akg 460, which to me just sounded more like the snare, kinda hi res. Sometimes I go back to a pair of 201's one on top and one on the side, but mostly it's been the 460 on top and either an earthworks sr 77 or a peluso cem6 on the side. I have to do some serious a/b's but I've really been liking the condensers on the snare

heil

heil pr 20 through an avalon ch strip and an aural exciter. !

swear to god

dont know why i tried it, but i did this on the bottom snare, and it was great! It added alot of presence and brightness. if you have the resources try it! ( really any mic would work, i just like the heil because nobody uses it, and it has a gold grill) Sound similar to an sm 58, with more boost around the hi-mids. (great for female vocals live)
