Lots of rock and jazz guys are mentioned. On the funk side this thread cannot end without mentioning Clyde Stubblefield and David Garibaldi. Talk about groove. Talk about personality.

there are only so many different sounds you can get out of marching band eqpt.

I'm a big fan of innovation
and I feel drums are infant to where they could very easily be distinctive
if only drummers had their own signature tone

to bad drummers don't build their own stuff
I know with stuff Ive built it has sounds that no other guitar has
I think I even have a one of a kind drum sound

my point is you probably will never get your own tone shopping at guitar centers
you have to build your own tone

I guess their is nothing wrong with basing your tone around some one else's tone
but its nice to be different or by being different being your self

long live binaural recording,

I have a drum that the harder you hit it the higher the pitch
a soft hit creates a low pitch

it would actually be a cool design for a tom or mot
its in hand percussion form now

Oh, there's a cat out of New Orleans that is the most kick ass, "second line", funky struttin', all up in your sh*t, drummer for one of the most unique unsung groups in modern jazz that have been together since forever, "Astral Project". He calls himself, Johnny Vidacovich. I used to call him, "Master". Check him out here: Astral Project: Online

yeah, some great players / musicians, for sure, etc. of course, these are summa MY favorites

but, hey - i like dave grohl (etc.), too. it's just hard to sway back to the 8th / 16th note universe,
once you've done the 64th note + at varying and high tempos, if you know what i mean.
plus, i love all the front end phrasing in trilok's playing, and the pull on manu's sh&t.

youtube is awesome - it's so great to be able to SEE some of these guys doin' their thing from years back. that bob moses clip is crazy, and dennis chambers is a frikkin' mutant, and max roach...i mean what can you say. smitty and omar - wow, and even the alex van halen and neil peart stuff is fun. simmon phillips is tasty, and weckl is his usual freak self. there's a LOT of really cool stuff in those videos. really exceptional musicianship.

for years, i worked with roy haynes' son, graham (cornet/flugelhorn)...sick stuff, great players...

i also worked with bernard wright, poogie bell, catfish alias, phil hamilton, dean brown,
marque gilmore, roberta flack, and the list goes on and on. some FUNKY sh&t...oh my.

poogie and catfish aren't on that list - oh, well - i guess they are now

I love Stubblefield's playing.

For quite a while he's often sat in on a little piano duo/trio that provides tunes and banter on the NPR live audience 'quiz' show, Whad'Ya Know?

According to Wikipedia:
Quote:
Stubblefield currently lives in Madison, Wisconsin. He has a weekly gig in Madison at the King Club, where he has played for over 20 years (including before the venue was so named). He plays every Monday night with his Madison band, The Clyde Stubblefield Band
It was mostly the piano player that did the talking, but every once in a while they'd draw Clyde into the banter. He seemed shy in that context but he has a nice, super dry sense of humor in those bits.

A cool guy.

Atom Willard has a very noticeable style, as does Brooks Wackerman.

I can usually tell if it's Jay Bellerose.

So...yes, this could apply to bass players. And guitar players too.
In the 60's and into the 70s every great drummer had their own sound and feel and so did every great bass player.
But...every car had its own look too. If you're old enough you'll remember that VWs looked like bugs and Volvos looked like stretched out bugs, Mustangs were cool, BMWs had their own thing. Can anyone tell a Saab from BMW from a Honda or Ford now?? Damn.
The homogenization of music is a crappy thing. But, you know everybody made alot of dough and the record companies are doing great...and...oh wait...

its the homogenization of CULTURE that is quickly becoming the norm.

drummers, music....just two of the casualties.

back on topic..

matt chamberlain INSTANTLY i know his playing.
jay bellrose
matt chamberlain
jack irons
stanton moore
steve gadd
john paul gaster from clutch
glen kotche

damon from don caballero

these guys have a STYLE

dare i add...alex van halen ?
i have not heard a van halen record since for unlawful carnal knowledge...so maybe i am wrong here. i just dont see avh getting beat detectived and sample replaced.

best,

jchristopherhughes

man

Is this a favorite drummers list or 'NAME THE last time you could tell who the drummer was'? if IAN PAICE WERE PLAYING ON THE NEW OZZY ALBUM...I WOULD HAVE NO CLUE. If MANU KATCHE WERE...I PROBABLY COULD. just my interpretation of the question...and you guys must be like sommeliers of the drums (blind tasting a 93 russian river valley pinot).
