Unless there was EQ applied individually to each mic, I don't think they sound simliar at all.

Mic 1 is very forward in the 500hz-1.2k region. Mic 2 is scooped in that same region.

I prefer mic 2.

But I prefer the guitars in Mix 2. They're more natural IMO and less mid-forward. But both have their place, so it's really up to artist/producer.

They don't sound close to me either... I think I like mic in clip #2 better as well, at least in this context.

Sound kinda different here too.
I like 'em both. Sold my 121 last week, still have a Naked Eye. I'd probably pick #2 for the rhythm and #1 for the lead tones. But I pretty much never work with that style so I'm pretty poorly qualified.

So clip 1 is the Naked eye, and clip 2 is the Royer.

So suggestions from these clips would be keep the royer ?

I prefered clip 1 guitars, though it sounds louder in the mix then the Clip 2, so that could be it

The Royer sounds dead in comparison. Anyway it sounds good... but the Naked Eye is outstanding!

Do you have the possibility to do an overhead-shootout (including both sides of the NE)? That is what I am really interested in!

I had guessed the NE was Mic 1 before reading your post with the answer. I much prefer it to the Royer in your samples. The Royer sounds muffled in comparison. The NE seems to flatteringly represent the whole frequency range. I might prefer the Royer on a clean ice-pick tele, but even then I'm not sure. I could see how a Royer would take a raspy high-end edge off.

Which side of the NE did you use, the label (i.e. darker) side? How did you position those mics?

If you can afford it, keep both. If I had to pick one, I'd keep the NE.

I like mic1 more, due to its dynamic catching and agressive behavior. I'd hope, moving it a little more offaxis would reduce upper frequs bite?

but damn, you've played these pretty cool riffs with such a groove, way better than the original song has, great

Exclamation

I clearly liked mic1's full bodied sound
I'm shocked to see that others liked mic2 and that it was a royer- my perenial favorite on guitar cabs....

I preferred the Naked Eye. But I would also like to hear a clip recorded with an sm57 for a point of reference.

This Naked Eye is a great mic
I thought both clips sounded decent, but preferrd the NE for its clarity and authenticity...even at a draw the NE is half the price, so I am very appreciative of this thread

Thanks!

I liked the detail in clip 1 especially in the rythym sections, but the Royer has something special going on in clip 2. Preferred clip 1.

For this style, I liked the Royer better. Less middy.

And my personal favourite in recording guitars: Combination of Naked Eye and D190

PS: Sorry, but I'm not a guitar player and the riff is a bit poor...

i think that it sounds pretty awesome.

makes me want to get one too.

i have going back and forth between getting a royer vs a naked eye.

your recording sounds nice and thick. the others that i have heard with the naked eye were pretty birght, almost like a LDC.

Cool comparison, you should make a separate thread for this.

I liked the Naked Eye and MD421 best. thumbsup
