| Lives for gear | Monitors between 1,000 and 1,800
Would you agree that for the most part you could mix just as well on most monitors in this price range? As long as you get to know the charcter of the monitors, (JBL, Adams, Tannoy, KRK, Dynaudio, Events, Mackie, etc) you would be able to get a final product that was good? Some have said you will always prefer a sound of one monitor over another, but unless you hate the sound of a particular monitor, you could do a good job on them. |

Your monitors are the single most important item in your studio. If you can't accurately hear what's going on, how will you be able to fully realize the potential of all of your other gear, microphones, instruments, etc. My best advice would be to scrape together another few hundred and at least go with something like the Focal Solo6's. Those really show you a lot of detail and will help you as you record and mix. Yes, we sell them, but I'm also an avid Focal user and love the pair of Twins that I've been using for almost a year now. The detail they reveal is just incredible.

Many of us have studios where we just record for fun and don't do this for a living...hence the reason for the question. I will also take into account having your room treated as well, but I wanted to focus on the question. Thanks | |

Great speakers, I tried them against ADAM A7 and S2a, Dynaudio BM6a, Focal Solo 6 and found K&H o110 the most natural and balanced sounding. They don't go extremely low, but I think enough for mixing.

In answer to your question--yes, I totally agree that once the tonal character of any one is referenced you could adapt to using it. I think, however, that at that price there are a lot of other audible aspects coming into play--amount of detail revealed, crossover effects, tonal balance, effects of tweeter fatigue, etc. that will push you to a favorite.

a little birdie told me there are new focal models aimed at that price point on display at musikmesse. in the bottom of your budget range i don't think anything currently touches the a7's. in the top i like the bm6a. for $200 more the solo6 puts you in another league as far as resolution and detail, but their sound takes some getting used to. if you're room is anything less than wonderful sounding, get the a7's and spend the rest on realtraps or diy 705 absorbers. the room is everything. gregoire del ubk . |

ubk, what you say is the solo 6 is "another league as far as resolution and detail" form the BM6a ? coz i wont to upgrade to one of the two.... and its funny that you said "for $200 more the solo6...." ,coz here in europe at the moment the BM6a cost extra 200 euro.... the more i here about the focal's (solo or twin), the more i lean to this direction. tnx. |
