| Drum Kit Mic Setups hello everyone one, this is my first time on the forum so this has probably been asked and answered many times but i havent been able to find it so i shall ask.... i just wanted opinions on STUDIO PROJECTS condenser microphones for use in a 4 mic drum recording setup. i was recently recommended to use 2 of these as over heads - 1 to be placed roughly 3 drum stick lenghts high above the bass drum batter, and one the same distance but to the floor tom side of the snare drum. because i am on a very very tight budget i just want opinons on wether this set up would get a decent drum sound or if id be better off getting a few sm 57's to put on the toms ? thanks and apologies for my stupidity |

| The technique you state is valid. I think i've heard it called the "recorderman" here, actually. The distances are a bit arbitrary, but both mics should be the same distance from the snare. You can also you the 2 condenser mics in the various other overhead fashions too. Add an sm57 for snare, some fashion of a kick drum mic, and you can call it a day. You don't need to put a mic on every drum to get a good recorded sound. Many people would even argue that minimal micing is the absolute best way to go (with a few disclaimers concerning kit, tuning, player, room, equipment, weather, sunspot activity, and phase of the moon). You can always add close tom mics a few units of time down the road when they work into the budget. Start with the good solid basics, and add the fluff on as needed. |
