...And while we're at it, how about the AKG BX boxes? A studio nearby is selling a BX20, is it worth it or should I go for a Demeter?

I have one and I ain't selling. Try demeter's site - I picked up one direct from them when I was in the US.

What's it sound like? It's veeeery smooth, more so than guitar spring verb (even though it uses the same kind of reverb tanks). It's great for dense, lush reverbs on some voices and acoustic instruments, and always works well on electric guitars. It gets pretty y with percussion stuff, which is good if you want f**ked up dub FX, but not really usable otherwise. All you can alter on it is the mix level, but it's amazing how well this can work, even if you're used to hours of tweaking on a lexicon. Even though one channel's short and one's long, you can still use it in stereo, as long as you place the results properly in yer mix. I don't use it all the time, but when it works it's fantastic and sounds quite unlike any digital verb.

It's also very quiet, as in absence of noise, and as in the levels out of it do not seem +4dB to me. Not usually a problem when you're using it on an aux send and mixing it with the original signal, but I have occasionally had to boost the level coming back in from it.

Still, it's definitely worth an audition if you can track one down.

I just ordered this baby from these people yesterday.

It's a really cool piece of mofo!

I was in touch w/ one of their guys today to inquire about a 19" tube spring reverb they used to make and it turns out thery're gonna release a new model more like the retroverb w/i the next few weeks. It's gonna be a nifty stereo tube spring reverb with a tube three band eq. Basically he told me it's an all tube design.

The only downside to these boxes is that they they are unbalanced because they're aimed mainly at electronic musicians and guitarists.
However, for the price I'm not complaining!

I'm really looking forward to getting that retroverb and I'll prolly order the ReTubeVerb from them too in a while!

if you want a picture of that tube one, PM me, I won't post it cos it's not been released yet

check 'em out!

edit: shit, from the picture it looks like the new tube one might be a mono unit. that would be sucky, cos their old TSR-3 model was stereo it didn't have the eq but it was dirt cheap (few hundred bucks).... well he said there'd be info up on their site w/i the next few days...

The Peavey Valverb gets good reports. Some of the Soldano stuff as well, but that's pretty expensive. Usually what's in the amp rocks for me. and is one of the things I prefer to track with, rather than add later.

Check out the Valverb.
I got mine for for around $150.
Tube reverb plus Tremelo.Probably not as quite or swanky as the Demeter but works in the mix.

If you can find one, try the Klark Teknik DN-50... I love mine. It works really well on guitars, although I wouldnt call it guitar specific....

I've got a Tubeworks Spring Reverb and I love it. Bought it used for cheap. Not for everything, but for some things.

Jules - are you looking only for the Demiter?

Spring Reverb - It's what's for breakfast.

Made a search for a bunch of user reviews which had me decide years ago to one day get me that dang, but couldn´t find them back.

Here is what I found today:
--------------
Larry Crane on PSW

This is one of my favorite things in the world, the Real Reverb analog spring reverb, by Demeter Labs. It’s just phenomenal. If I need reverb on vocals, I rarely touch anything else, unless I want a really different effect. It’s also good for drum effects, like reggae dub drum splashes. It’s been out for about a year. The problem for some people is that it only does one thing, but that’s what I love about it. And then I have this old Ibanez multi-mode analog delay…
-----------------

Customer´s letter to EveAnna

4. Demeter Real Reverb spring reverbs. We have tried using a Lexicon PCM81 and Eventide Eclipse, and both are good units. However, the reverb from the Demeter sounds the most natural.
-----------------

For this review, I compared the RV-1 to an Orban 111B, an AKG BX-20 and a spring reverb built into an old Electrocomp modular synth. The sound quality and imaging of the RV-1 unit blew away the Orban and equaled the dark character of both the AKG and Electrocomp. It never felt brittle or irritating—no tiny “springing” echo that would grate nerves. The sound had a clear vintage appeal with a modern studio feel.

Alex Artaud

Whether tracking or mixing, the RV-1 was a joy to work with. It provided a wonderful shimmer on acoustic and electric guitars, and gave my Minimoog depth and room to breathe. I found that gentle application of the RV-1 imp- roved vocals I had tracked and stored to hard disk. I also recorded percussion through individual channels, occasionally tracking the “chirping” spring of the hi-hat to use later in a song. In general, the RV-1 added a wonderful, spacious quality to the finished stereo mixes I auditioned. While the difference in decay times between the channels was slightly noticeable on lighter instrumental passages, it never distracted me.

I personally havent tried the Demeter (which is lame because I am posting here) but I bought a Accutronics Accuverb off ebay which is absolutely great on guess what !! Electric guitars !!

It`s better than your stock model you`d find on a Fender Twin or something and it`s also really good on various keys.
Anything percussive including acoustic guitars it starts to get bouncy. But other than that it`s been really cool as a second or third verb and I`ve even used it on vox a couple times.
