UA 610 solo as DI (input/output knob not working?)

Maybe this question will illustrate my newbiness...

If I plug in my mic through the XLR inputs/outputs on the UA 610 solo, the input/output knobs work just fine. Through the DI box, I'm getting a signal, but the knobs don't make anything louder or softer. No matter what, the level stays the same. I switched it to the DI setting... it's not really quiet, but I still feel like I could crank it up a whole lot.

Is this the way DIs are supposed to work? Or do I have a defective unit?

I think I may have solved the problem - I was using the Through, rather than the output in the back.
