Los Angeles Mixing/Transfer Studios

Hi, I don't know if this is the appropriate forum, but there's not really a "For Hire/Looking To Hire" forum on GS, so the main will have to do I guess.

I'm looking for mixing studios that can transfer material from 8-track 1/2" reels with good converters and mix in ProTools using a solid outboard mixer, and then possibly output to a 1/2" 2-track reel.

The reason I don't just post a basic thread regarding this is that I don't have work on 2" tape and many studios don't bother with 1/2" except for final mixdown.

While I have an awesome little set-up for tracking, I don't have a lot of ITB conversion technology for mixing.

I'm not for certain on anything mostly speculating. But as many know, the 5 P's are in order when dealing with recording or filming anything.

As always, any constructive feedback welcome.

Why not just take your 1/2" machine to someone else's room? If you have an Otari 8 track or the like, chances are the alignment of your machine will be...um... unique, and your tapes won't play back the same on another machine anyway.

K, yeah, that is an option. I thought that all machines were different anyway and that's why I'd have to run tone so that if somebody had a machine they could match it.

At least, I was told that's how people used to work.

I guess the biggest detractor of that is those things weigh a ton.

My primary reason for the previous suggestion is that I'm betting that if you were to draw a Venn diagram of a.) the studios with a well-maintained 1/2" 8 track and b.) the studios with PTHD and great plugs; a 192 or better; an analog console whose summing will beat ITB and; a 1/2" ATR, the a and b circles would not intersect.

But LA's a big town. I could be wrong.

Yeah, I had a feeling that the odds were slim. I guess I'll cross that bridge when I get there.

I'd be happy just to find a transfer house that had one. And then take project stems to a mixing studio.

Thanks anyways man.

Totally, sounds great. It's a little early yet before we actually being mixing, but I'm over in Los Feliz which is really close.

Peace,

Heh, well I work all the time, and for fun I work on my "studio" which is really a second job even at a recreational level if you try to get the best sound possible in a given space.

I can probably hook you up with the transfer, PT, and console. No 1/2" 2 track though. . . .

It's probably too late for your project, but I can do transfers from 1/2" 8 track (and just about any other analog format you can mention too, with or without noise reduction). I'm in North Orange County:

Multitrack Analog to Digital Transfers - Thin Brown Line

Hi David,

Yes, regrettably so. I've upgraded to an MCI JH24 and at this point I won't be doing transfers. Thanks though.
