Pair of mics for OH and acoustic guitars (1000 usd)

Hello , what`s your advice?
There are some Josephons and some other nice mics like Oktavamod 012 for this purpose ...i don`t know exactly this subject...I don`t like overbright mics i like mids and i prefer good quality than low price.Preamps to choice : Great River MP2NV or chandler TG2.

Personally, I'd save another hundred or two and purchase Neumann KM-184s (or better yet, Neumann KM-84). They are outstanding mics.

That's your call. I personally wouldn't plunk down that kind of money for chinese mics - tube or not - but that's me.

The Neumanns are the gold standard that all others are measured to. Another mic I would seriously consider (that you'd have to purchase on the used market) would be something in the Earthworks line. Good luck on your search.

+1 on the Neumanns.

If they are too much money AT4031s are very inexpensive used and sound quite good on OHs or on acoustic guitars.
But my guess is there are many other options too.

Great mics - as are the Shure SM81's - but I'd still take a pair of Neumann KM-84's over either of those.

Schoeps CMC6 with MK4 or MK21 capsule. Or, Wunder CM7 with K47 capsule. These are all stellar, albeit expensive.

Groove Tube mics

The original Groove Tubes mics Md1, 2 & 3 and the mid 90's revision's MD1a, 2a and 3a are all very good valve mics and you would be very pleased with any of these and they were not made in China. They come up on Ebay fairly often with power supply's that power 1 or 2 mics. I have a couple and they are great for many applications and overheads are one of them. Price wise they are a hell of a buy at about $500.00 for a high quality valve mic. That said I dislike all Groove Tube mics that were made after Alesis bought Groove Tubes and have not even tried the newer Chinese made mics. Get a couple of older ones you'll love'em, regards ,,deda,,

In the middle would be the Sennheiser e914s and Shure KSM137/141s. I've used and enjoyed both, along with KM84is. The Neumanns have less of a 'sound' to them (in an exceptionally good way), but either of the above would be worth considering if the budget's firm.

You might want to look in to the Peluso CEMC6.

I'm REALLY liking my Peluso CEMC6.
I compared them to Josephson and preferred them (Josephson's are brighter).

Also compared them to Oktavamod 012, SM81 and KM184 which I have used for a long time.

Beyer mc930's are nice, a bit bright, but nice. KM184s are different, more middy, and not for everything. Oktava 012's are a notch down but respectable for the dough, and offer interchangeable capsules. No one's ever put up a recording of Josephsons in a shootout which probably means they are being protected from a fair evaluation, but I've never heard them. The Peluso SDCs have never shown well in the shootouts I've heard. The Avenson STO-2 is a nice inexpensive 1/4" electret, which like all mics of that design (earthworks etc.) have some self-noise but these sound really good miced close. And then there's the AT4051a which has a somewhat scooped profile, with sweeter transients, that can work well if that's what you want.

Thats probably because you've never used/heard the GT40(44)s. They are very well built and sound beautiful. I huse the holy hell out of my pair! Everything from acoustic guitar, drum OH (always!), elec gtr amp/cab, trumpet, mandolin, 'fiddle', banjo, dobro and upright piano.

They are fantastic mics and I HIGHLY recommend them. They stand up to everything I've thrown at them. I also move them around a lot from session to session and work them quite hard. They never give me a single issue and they always sound consistent and great.

GT has a solid name in this market and they would not put out a crap product and let it spoil their name. I have 6 of their mics and 2 of their preamps. I have used some combination of them on every session I've had for the last 3 years and not a single thing has given me a problem. Oh, and they stack beautifully.

Go for it!

I normally use 451's but a friend brought over an AKG 414 so we put his and mine up and I have to say I kind of like it. A little smoother, less brassy than the 451. Normally I'm not a big fan of the 414, I've had one for years and never used it that much.
There's probably better options in your price range but I thought I'd throw that one out there.

Somebody mentioned AT 4031 I have a 4041 which is very bright, nice mic and I don't know if the 4031 is similar sounding but for my room it wouldn't be my first choice for overheads.
