SPL Transient Designer

Hi Jules

I know in the past you were talking about getting in an SPL Transient Designer. I'm thinking of buying one myself, so did you go ahead and buy one, and if so having spent time with it, has it been a worthwhile addition?

There's really nothing in my studio that does what the Transient Designer does. It does wonders on overheads when you want to have less of the room in the recording. You can almost make things sound like they were miked closer than you originally did. Kick and snare drums can sound even tighter. It is definitely a necessity when recording and mixing drums.

The TC Triple-C is also very capable of envelope compression (and lots of other neat dynamic tricks, including multiband and a very good de-esser). Worth considering?

I've got a four channel unit (not for sale) and it's really worth having one.It does things nothing else(in my studio) does .You can do great stuff with loops and percussion instruments in general .You only have two knobs and that's all that's needed.

I picked up a four channel unit about 18 months ago from Coast Recording Supply in LA... 323-462-6058... ask for carl dito and he'll hook ya up! it's like nothing else out there!

West L.A. Music out here in Cali was able to get me one without any trouble. I've got the 2-channel version. Crazy box--like nothing else. It may seem "gimmicky" before you hear one, but it's a seriously well-made tool. Very effective for tweaking drums.

no.....it's the secret "weapon of choice" of more than a few rock mixers that I know...and they came out with a cheap two channel version. This (transient designer...can you say "super snare&toms"), a pair of royer121's, a pair of vipre pre's and pair of IBP's are what I'm soon after....

Yeah, it's also on my shopping list for next year. I am big fan of this SPL stuff since I bought their 8 channel tube processor Charisma - Also heard their Channel One Pre Amp - great shit!

I've seen the SPL Transient Dwsigner discussed here at GS but haven't encountered one in the real world.
Could someone explain it's uses, give a few examples of what it'd be really strong on?

Its really great at manipulating the sustain of instruments(ie, Drums,bass and guitar). It also works great in a sub mult to bring out the attack in instruments(ie snare mult) without EQ. On a vocal it can work as an effect.

It is very clean/neutral with just a touch of sparkliness(similar sounding to a GML).

Sometimes I wish it had more character, but i guess you can't have everything.yuktyy

In very simple terms, when used on individual drums or a kit (drumloop etc) you can tighten or expand the sound. Useful if you find the perfect loop but it's too ambient. Or you need to liven up some dead drums.
Kind of a one trick (ok, two) pony, but pretty cheap for a nice sounding box.

How does it compare to a powerful compressor? It's abilities sound simmilar to what I can get out of my Distressor.

Ok I don't mean to

on the TD, but you can do that with a normal comp. Just feed the comp a very loud signal, set the ration real high, set the threshold real low, and adjust the attack so that the hit gets through, but then the tone gets squished. To totally mask the tone, run the signal through a gate afterwards so only the transient is heard.

Voila, little spikey bits for you.

I want one to 'trick out' larger room sounds from my tiny drum booth.. and to perhaps go the other way - loose short reflections altogether to get 'super dead' sounds....

Who is using theirs on tracking or on mixing or on both... ???
