sennheiser 609? 421?

For toms, but I hear there very versatile mics that have many applications. Initially I was planning on just buying two 421's and that would be that. But I've been hearing some things about the 609 and there far cheaper so just wanna make sure the extra money is worth it. Or maybe 2 421's and a 609?
YOur thoughts?
thanks

I bought a 609 Silver recently and tried it on toms last week along with a few others. FWIW, the 421 smoked it on that particular kit.

I really liked it on a guitar cab the next day, however, wher I used it instead of the 421.

421s are still my favourite tom mics after trying various others recently - largely because the 421s can be a bitch to position.

What kind of sound did you get on the guitar cab with the 609? When thinking about guitar cab micing, i wanna do it with, sm57 and a royer 121 i'd also have other mics like 414 and such to do it with. has anybody tried audix mics for toms? how do they compare to 421?

In the past I always used a 421 and a 57 tight together on the one speaker, with another 57 on the back if it's an open cab. When I got my Royer it became my "go to" guitar mic.

Last week I had a bit of time on my hands, however, and set up my 57 and 421 combo, the 609 and the Royer.

The 609 sounded fuller than either the 57 or the 421 individually (and even the combination after adjusting for volume) with more lows. The Royer was inevitably much smoother, but since I wanted a little fizz for certain parts of the song, I recorded the 609 and the Royer to two separate tracks and switched between them in the mix.

Quite a big sound from it, actually. The amp was a 59 Bassman reissue, but with a 2x12 cabinet, driven to a nice crunch.

For toms, I put 421's through a shootout against, believe it or not, Audix D-2's and the D2's were distinctly better. a richer more rounded sound. better tone quality. Been using them ever since.

ATM25s! They ROCK on toms, kick, guitar cabs, bass cabs... For $100 a pop you won't go wrong with these. They're built like tanks too.

$0.02
