help with lining up drum samples

99.9% of the stuff i do uses snare and kick and tom samples.

my question is how should i line them up to get the best result?

once i have all of the drums replaced, what i do is zoom way in and line the samples up with the real hits captured in the oh mics.

is this the way to do it, or should i line the samples up with the real drums themselves?

Line it up to the timing of the music.........???

There is no right answer here, really,

Set the First Kick Hit to Beat 1
And then line them all up according to the transients of the original parts.

What sounds best to you? Your overheads will be slightly time delayed from your close mics. If you are replacing your close mic drums with dry samples, you could argue that you should align them with the close mic tracks. Aligning them with the overheads would be unnatural - but punchier. You might prefer the sound. But considering that transient peaks can be a problem in digital, you are compounding that problem. You probably have to consider what is going to happen later on, especially in mastering. All those peaks that you are lining up might get shaved off anyway ...

I would use the "real drums themselves" as the reference, and leave the OH's to act like OH's.

do you have midi in your DAW? Why no drumagog?
anyhoo poor mans drumagog as follows.

gate and compress the drums tracks then use this prog.

MuseBook Wav2Midi

there are several like it that are actually better

then download a free plugin sampler there are several also.
just trigger via midi. Velocity intact
Ive been doing it this way for 10 years now, works killer
