FMR RNC -- Do U Use Bump Boxes?

Hi all--

I have an RNC, and like it a lot, but I'm finding it annoying to use because of the need to patch in bump boxes to convert the signals to unbalanced on the way in to the RNC, and back to balanced on the way out. I'm simultaneously converting the nominal levels down to -10, then back up to +4.

I'd like to hear opinions as to how necessary or beneficial this is.

Thanks!

I've stayed away from these boxes for that very reason ... not much of a value (for me) if I have to buy more gear to run them balanced.

aphex

I had a aphex 124 dual bump box on mine for a while.
it put the levels more in the ball park.
mostly it was to make it foolproof in the patchbay.

It was fine %90 of the time unbal so not sure if it's really worth it.

What happened the other 10 percent of the time? And in what circumstances, and with what type of material, did problems occur?

Thanks!!!

Why not just wire a balanced cable to unbalanced 1/4??

works fine on my end,

What are you using as an interface? I have never used a bump box and never had problems

That's how it was.

Only a couple things didn't quite work this way.

I really can't remember what chain was weird.

I think it was in the bay going, tranny out mic pre into la3a into rnc into lucid ad24.

something in the chain didn't like the termination (level drop weird distortion). when the rnc was removed from the chain, it was good. or with the aphex bump box it was good. Maybe cause my la3 had a 620 ohm terminator? dunno.

it was really rare whatever it was. I went back to no bump box.
I think the bump added it's own issues, I mean why go thru more circuits anyway.

I'd go with the mixwell's cable. And don't worry about it. The directions with the rnc are very clear about bal to unbal cable building.

I had the aphex laying around. tried it, then went back to no bumpbox.

I was having a really bad time getting my RNC into my patchbay setup, balanced cables in theory should have worked but they never connected quite right. So I got a single TRS to stereo TS (basically and insert cable) and stuck the TRS into the RNC and the TS into their respective patchbay slots and it works great, no drop in levels between my SCA pres and my PSX-100.
I also have a friend who uses it between his SCA pres and his Mytek converters without a patchbay and has no issues. The cable runs are really short so no noise is introduced.
Different strokes.
