Pro Tools automation help...

hey there, quick question that im sure will be answered shortly...
im using an ICON console with PT 7.3.1 and i really like using automation with the faders, its a lot of fun! anyway, the problem i have with the automation im doing (auto write) is that after i do a short section of automation, i no longer can move the fader without it jumping back to its spot previous to that automation. Im pretty sure theres a better way to do there where that doesnt happen, im just not sure which automation mode is the one im looking for. For instance, id like to be able to automate (volume) for a small section, and still have control over the faders for the rest of the song...any help?

I think you want to be in "write" mode, as you are probably in "touch" mode.

Ok here we go....

Write mode will overwrite any automation on the track. After you hit stop while in write mode it will switch to touch or latch mode depending on the preferences you set.

Touch mode will follow any automation on the track except when you are touching it (it can sense that you are touching it) and will start writing even if you just hold it in place. As soon as you let go it will glide back to the automation that was written on it previously. (The time it takes to glide is called Auto-Match time and can be controlled in the preferences).

Latch mode will do the same as touch mode but when you let go of the fader/controller it will not "glide" back to the data written on the track, it will continue to write the current position.

Sounds like you are in touch mode but want LATCH mode... not write.

Use the auto button above the fader to switch between these settings.

Personally I try to only do automation at THE VERY END of mixing otherwise you have to deal with massaging it every time you adjust anything else. I also pretty much only do automation with the mouse/tools in PT... it is very exact and fast. Give it a shot sometime.

rock on!
